The internet killed subcultures not just by making everything popular, but by allowing "normies" to publicly shame those who deviate from the norm to millions through apps like tiktok and instagram, preventing people from actively participating in subcultures IRL. Subcultures then occupy the internet as a last resort, becoming homogenized and vulgar due to the diverse blob of users that participate in said subcultures. Instead of "emos" and "hippies," we get neo-nazis and femboys.
