Update: I finished the book ages ago. Honestly, it turns out it wasn't ACTUALLY some diesease but some government cover up probably. How the fuck that worked I have no clue. Overall tho the story was quite nice though ended suddenly. Definitely more of a booktok recommendation but the writing was nice and kept me hooked.

I have a thought while reading a book about how cannibalism becomes normalized in an alternate society. Apologies if I sound like cinema sins but if cannibalism was normalized in our modern human society then wouldn't mad cows disease become a major problem? There is no cure for it so its far more dangerous than something like food poisoning or salmonella so wouldn't that make human flesh actually more expensive than regular meat thus making it a more expensive commodity than any other animal? You could say the puffer fish but thats just as expensive too due to the rigorous verification process. Same thing could apply to cannibalism.

Context: Society got broke and couldn't afford regular meat so they chose humans.
