Whatever one chooses, it's always bad according to some people: phpBB is way overused; Flarum and Discourse are too modern; XenForo is closed-source and paid. The best thing is to choose a thing, deploy the desired forum, and use it thoroughly. Otherwise, everybody would be stuck on Discord...
