    big swaths of people born 1985 and later can be described as either terminally online or just, much of their lives revolve around the use of their computer. it's only natural that guitar, drums, and even vocals end up being relegated to instruments that can either be emulated with a computer, or that they'll be replaced entirely by something new (ie: in vapor, it's synths and samples)

    socially and politically though... i mean, maybe i'm in a bubble, but i don't see any boundaries being pushed outside of ignoring copyright law (though many vaporwave acts have legitimate fair use arguments)

    I read an article that argued it subverts the myths of the current moment by keeping the myths and feelings of the recent past alive. Don't worry this wasn't the Dummy magazine one either.

    That societal beliefs and conceptions change, but vaporwave keeps the feelings of older ways discarded by the mainstream still somewhat tangible. The myths that say US or European countries told themselves in the 1980s, aren't exactly the same ones that exist today. Therefore, it holds some degree of human potential in it for different worlds being possible. I don't know if that connects at all to you?

    that's an interesting perspective. i'd have to think about it more but, for instance tonight i was listening to some music i was really into over a decade ago; am i subverting modern myths just by choosing to listen to music i liked when i was younger? vapor is new music and is a new thing, even if it's referencing old stuff, ya' know? but i'm not sure how they're defining myths and feelings. i mean, i put on 2814 for the first time and i felt like, i've never heard anything like this before. first time i heard Floral Shoppe i felt like, whoa this is making be feel some stuff, music doesn't normally make me feel this type of way.

    and i don't wanna be too negative to the perspective but like, i only recently started listening to Fleetwood Mac and i still haven't ever really listened to Diana Ross. so even though (some) vapor artists are recontextualizing a lot of this older media, it's still new to me both from it literally being a new song and new interpretation, but also because i had never heard the source material in the first place

    Yeah I could link you to the article, it gets very sociological so I was having trouble wading through it myself XD. It is centered around this concept of "affect" which I had a hard time understanding; one definition is that it is kind of like "the background noise" that defines a society or time, things people take for granted. I don't think they mean myths in a like Ancient Greek sense, but just referring to the stories that society tells itself or the different stories people tell themselves about what their life purpose is or who they are.
