It makes people seethe as it embodies what they missed out on. Most people who read those sort of mangas are nerds who don't have many friends or sexual encounters and use these sort of highschool mangas with these cutesy friends groups to get a glimpse of what they missed. At first it works as they connect and grow to love the characters, some even being relatable, but then the creator pulls the rug, the characters fall in love, are genuinely happy and have the bright futures ahead, which is something the reader doesn't have; it jabs at all his insecurities and reminds him of the hole he is in, the life he does not have and with his mental health issue most likely will never experience. You can only do so much with a bad dice roll.
