Although it started in 1999, The Big O is and always will be my favorite mecha and is definitely in my top 10. The setting, music and characters are so stylish and oozes this incredible neo-noir theme and reminds me a lot of the game Snatcher. It's also a combination of Batman: The Animated Series and Neon Genesis Evangelion. I highly recommend it.

Yeah, that's right, I took l@in is here thread and took it into the 2000s! Movies, OVA's and anime series all are welcome to discuss, and yes maybe some early 2010s animes too but please be reasonable.

Going to share one of my favourite anime intros to start off:

Anyone else remember Welcome to the NHK? One of the first animes I can recall that properly delved into the mental health crisis that was becoming (and still is) prevalent throughout Japan. It covered it all; from suicide, depression, social isolation, to even the roping in of desperate people into pyramid schemes. I originally watched it back when I was 14 but the anime has really stuck to me over the years and how it to braved touchy subject matter.

The anime was too sanitised. Try the book. It is my favourite example of surrealism. I am still reading the manga but it seems good so far.

07-Ghost is the first anime I watched that just ended way too early and left me hanging bad. I don't think many people have seen it, but it's a pretty good one. It has a cool setting and interesting magic system.

Can't believe no one mentioned FLCL. God damn, the sequels were total ass.

Ah, this takes me back. I used to watch anime with my ex wife in the 2000s. I see that the great Satoshi Kon is already represented (god tier shit for sure and definitely my favorite from this era). A couple that I remember that were great in different ways:

For those that are a little more obscure, Monster was great. Pretty long though for an anime series, I'm remembering like 70+ episodes?

For something dumb and lighthearted for when you're high or something, I always liked Hare and Guu:

What did the basketball bat kid represent then?
The baseball bat kid represented possibility of the hardship of specific trauma in our lives tempering us in to better people, for it's impossible for us to grow without struggle, even it it's unpleasant for us in the moment.

I recently watched Hidamari Sketch (2007)! It was really lovely. I'm not sure if there is something specific about CGDCT series from the 00's, but I've really got a soft spot for them. That, and Ume Aoki, whose art was the reason I watched the series in the first place. Highly recommended if you're looking for something healing and light-hearted. Bonus points if you like art, but the series isn't that focused on it and is fully enjoyable even if you don't!
