• I added an agora current events board to contain discussions of political and current events to that category. This was due to a increase support for a separate board for political talk.

Although 4chan was a little bit of a hell scape it was one of the last strongholds of old internet there's no other image board that has persisted as long with such a large user base. It's sad to see basically the last non-corporate mainstream website die.

And more than anything I'll mourn the loss of /x/. So much of the creepypastas and spookies stories we love started there. And also I really believe there were small sprinkles of real gnosis on there. It was a lot like panning for gold. You go on to the board and pick out all the big rocks(nobody threads, semen retention, succgen, etc) than you slowly sift out to finer and finer gravel. You get to the bottom and after all the larpers and schizos you might find one or two threads that says something amazing, or atleast very compelling.

I originally heard about the dead internet theroy there, I think cognito hazards are interesting I've heard some strange stories. I think the wild hunt thread may be one of the most convincing documentions of a paranormal phenomena I've ever seen, real or not. It was a fun place to be.

So there was this board called /qa/ which was created to host Moot's final Q&A before leaving the site. For some reason the jannies didn't delete it after the Q&A was over so for years it was an unlisted, unmoderated board. Ok well, there was a bit of moderation, NSFW stuff would give you a ban, but aside from that it was fair game. So in other words, it was like a blue board /b/. Because of this, the board developed several factions trying to "claim it". Early on the board got "claimed" by /jp/ and [s4s]. Then later on it became the anime vs pepe board. And finally around 2019 is when the soyjak spamming began. Soyjak was already a meme since around 2017, but around 2019 people on /qa/ started using them to spam the board into oblivion, and they were so successful that they basically drowned out all the other factions. I think what made them so successful is, you couldn't really do anything about it. Anything you posted, they would just repost with a greentext accompanied by a soyjak. It's like the final form of trolling. Your only choices were to join them or be jak'd. That being said, even during this time there were still other factions. The weebs, the frog posters, the Lee baiters, the bronies, the Ongezellig posters, the Higurashi posters, but they all kinda just accepted that the soyjaks won and joined them.
It was mass spam soyop that destroyed all individuality and creativity from the chans (even though it was already anyways). I fucking soyjaks more than the Jannies at this point.

I mean there's still stuff like lainchan and x-chan but yeah imageboards were kind of dying off from the start. If we were really honest, 4chan died in 2015-2016.

I mean yeah, but my point is like 7/10 people will no about 4chan mabye like 2/10 can name any other active image board. 4chans not the only one(we're actively on an old web style forum) but it was really the only one with any kind of notoriety even if it was infamy.

Fair. Though, I think I'm good with 4chan specifically dying (unless you're talking about containment, then its tragic.). I've grown to realize that we do need a healthy userbase but I would have a small, minimal growth with users that respect the culture of a site than a massive growth.

It *needs* to come back up, it fullfills a niche for autists and degens so important it's like sugar for fat fucks, there needs to be an alternative or it needs to exist, it's just a constant for some people's lives.

Anyone want to start betting on when 4chan will be back up? My bet is in 3 months time due to how thoroughly they got screwed
I'll take you up on that bet and say longer if you're willing to include a "further hacking clause" where they must be back up and stable for a minimum* period of 6 months.
P.S. Tbh, they'd be wise to just (re)start fresh.

The end of an era if it doesn't come back. It's true that its userbase has been in decline over the past decade but it hasn't really lost relevance. There has been a sort of trickle down effect of not just memes but also politics, buzzwords, and subcultures. Many of those who used 4chan were obviously active on other mainstream platforms, 4chan screencaps would frequently go viral on sites like twitter and even plebbit.

I'm assuming this is just a speedbump and the site will be restored in a couple months. But if this was by design, if the site has been nuked from orbit by dark forces (the "deep state" or whatever) and cannot be allowed to return then this is gonna suck. 4chan was the place where you could get loose, have fun, and explore taboo topics whereas everywhere else feels like you have to walk on eggshells. It's not surprising the site got as big as it did.

Interesting perspective. I used to love /x/ from like 2010-2014, by far one of the most interesting and creative boards. But when it went from talking about spooky stuff with a nice mix of fiction and some really werid IRL Stories to full blown larping it became unbearable for me. I'd say no board had a bigger overall drop in quality. Bad boards got worse but /x/ went from one of the best to completely unbrowsable.
IDK what happened with the userbase but it went from a few creative dudes interested in horror and weird shit to a bunch of teenaged girls thinking they can read palms/tarot cards and cast magikckck and a shit ton of 100% mentally ill nutjobs pretending to be time travelling aliens or some shit.. Don't get me started on all the succubus/vampire shit. And then all this "crytsal energy" tier esoteric slop and faux spirituality. It's like they became the butt end of their own joke.

I really respect your tolerance to keep lurking on a board that was mutilated as heavily as /x/ was. Going there after 2015 always made me incredibly sad over the state of it and I'd see nothing of what it once made it one of my top 3 boards.

twitter should be above 4chan since half the threads were twitter screencaps

/x/ became the default spirituality board since it was the closet board that could cater to it. Sort of fucked over people who just wanted spooky stories but weren't ever "true believers." I also feel there is a generational thing going on, with Millenials largely being secular growing up during they hey day of fedora atheism, where as Zoomer's have just been raised in cultural ruble and seem more open to woo.
