Does 4chan even have "street cred" anymore to make this worth being sad about? Once upon a time 4chan had weirdos, edgelords, and degenerates. Now the weirdos and edgelords are on >redditcostanzayeahrightsmirk so only degenerates remain. We're long past the days of 4chan generating memes, Anonymous organizing DDOS attacks and fighting Scientology, the 4chan Tumblr War, and the many other events that 4chan was central for.

What I'd be curious to see in this hypothetical is how much 4chan would sell for, and who would buy it?

Personally I don't think 4chan is permanently going anywhere as a result of this hack. It'll be back and still have it's niche.

The occasional leak is still posted to 4chan, and some boards have worthwhile posts and threads. /vr/ and I think some /vg/ threads had decent posts, as well as some /tg/ threads too.

in other news, people are actually starting to process the fact soyjack are the ones who did the hack(a.k.a starting to discover other image boards exist) and not some anti-racism super squad force or smt, with the usual flare of righty vs lefty stupid bullshit

The Nintendo Giga Leak threads were so fun to watch in real time as people dug thru the data and got it running, legimately one of the few highlights of the pandemic times

Where will I get my opinions on books, games and films I don't read, play nor watch now? Truly the burning of Alexandria of our time.
It's a terrible day for obnoxious internet contrarians

This is like watching a relative that's dying of amnesia finally going to a better place.

I will never forget being there at ground zero when I saw the leaked Typhlosion lore. Those fucking stories basically astroturfed half the board for at least 2 weeks with all sorts of shitposting.

There was also some seething about the leaks here and there.

Looks like they'll get flooded with tourists. Especially the soyjak folks since they're at the center of it all

4chan had a lot of resources for different subcultures and interests. If you wanted to be recommended a solid piece of software / hardware, for example, there was probably a general thread on /g/ for it, and their recommendations were way better than >redditcostanzayeahrightsmirk, twitter, youtube, or anything else, even if people in those threads were constantly screaming at each other about how their video player was better than another person's video player or something like that. It wasn't "creating culture" (at least, not to the same degree it was 10+ years ago) but it was a useful place for stuff like that, and it sucks that it's gone for that reason. I'm also salty that /vr/ is gone, since that was one of the only places to discuss old games online that didn't fucking suck.

I think I caught that shit live I saw "QA FUCKING WON" at the top of /g/ and was wondering what the fuck was happening. It's weird for me to think about how I feel about it being gone because the site was pretty shit especially at the time of getting hacked but I did still browse it for shit like /g/ so it feels weird to have that gone now. I'll say though I'm not really expecting it to be gone forever or anything even if it gets worse overtime the site still seemed to have its niche and people posting on it (even if probably half are bots). There isn't really other sites like 4chan that were as big as it was so I expect them to put in the work to get it back so they can have that audience. If the site has been kept up until this point without just getting shut down then there's probably some use/money Hiro's getting out of it that he'll want to keep but we'll see.

I think it's better described as a difference between hobbyist culture and pop culture. I think 4chan was last relevant in any meaningful pop culture way back in 2016 in the lead up to Trump's first term with all the pepe and -oomer wojak stuff. I absolutely agree that it was an invaluable resource for finding knowledge or information on hobbyist subjects. I mentioned /tg/ before, but if you wanted to learn more about how to make a diorama, or painting techniques and recommendations, you'd be able to ask there, and there'd be a bunch of information shared with you. A fair amount from old White Dwarf magazines and old hobbyist magazines, that don't really exist in quite the same way nowadays.

I also think there's some kind of aesthetic that people find desirable in it, similar to how the Personal Web has a sort of early 2000s aesthetic, though that was discussed more here in this thread. If 4chan is gone for good, it will feel like a loss somewhat comparable to Yahoo geocities(even though a fair amount is archived so the actual material loss is low)

I like to dream of change, but you are right. The most likely scenario is that nothing will change, the thing will just come back online with a new backend and anons will resume posting on generals every 900 seconds.

congrats good sir, you predicted the future. you get a free agora-chan plushy.

sharties are now raiding 4chan related and a punch of lgbt tags with ugly soyjacks, self jerking posts about their victory, and gore(the censord image below is someone cutting their own cock with a circular saw. but i also saw the christchurch mosque shooting and a black guy getting his throught slit).
