If you read the article, that's more or less what they told the guy and then they kicked him out of google because he breached NDA. Technical stuff notwithstanding, the main difference is that the discussion revolved on wether the AI was sentient, not that if it was evil.

Apparently the guy was onto occultism and generally seemed to be the kind of person to have some more "out-there" beliefs.
