In the past decade there's been a good deal of child protection panic floating around the internet. The irony is that the companies that ask whether you're over <whatever age> are asking so (you / your child) violates the terms of service if it's a lie. That way they can reasonably say "we only allow users over 13 on our platform in accordance with local law, if users are joining under that age they are breaching the terms of service".
The only way around this is with some kind of national ID, so the fact that this is deemed "good enough" by the West works in our favour.
