Recently, a bipartisan bill was introduced to ban Chinese social media company TIKTOK from the United States. Tiktok claims this will not increase security in the United States, and will fight to ensure it's platform stays available.

In his final months of presidency, Trump threatened to ban it if an american company didn't buy operating rights for the US. A bipartisan bill sounds way more likely to happen

"The legislation would block all transactions from any social media company in or under the influence of China and Russia."
I despise TikTok but this would set a really bad precedent. If the bill passes you can bet that within a month silicon valley will shit out a 100% American Made clone that sends all its user data to the feds instead of the CCP.

As much as I'd love TikTok to be gone, I don't like it when the government bans anything in general. So I can't really condone this move. If we want our kids to get off TikTok, the best way is to give them something better to do.

Must be why it's bipartisan, then. I know the Republicans already want to ban Tiktok just because China. I guess Silicon Valley corps (and the feds) saw Twitter dying and wanted to prop a replacement up, but couldn't do that with Tiktok providing competition, so they called upon their Democrat contacts to support the bill as well.

I guess I'm in the minority here for being happy about this and hoping it gets passed. In addition to the obvious problems with it being Chinese spyware, China bans all kinds of American tech companies from operating there (Amazon, LinkedIn, basically all the socials, streaming services, etc.) but is still able to shill their spyware here. You will be hard pressed to find someone who is more in favor of free markets than I am, but that's under the assumption that everyone is playing the same game and has the same degree of access which is clearly not what's happening here.

If the bill passes you can bet that within a month silicon valley will shit out a 100% American Made clone that sends all its user data to the feds instead of the CCP.
Both are bad, but you cannot seriously claim in good faith that they're equally bad. The US is not using tech to commit genocide on religious minorities, the US is not welding people inside their apartment buildings to die from fires, the US does not disappear people for protesting. Fuck China, full stop.

If we want our kids to get off TikTok, the best way is to give them something better to do.
I used to be of this opinion as well, but after spending time designing algorithms I no longer feel this way. Simply put, it's not a fair fight: it's pitting mass data aggregation utilized to hijack millions of years of evolution against your ability to resist temptation. To your point more specifically, there are better things all around that people are rejecting en masse in order to spend more time scrolling. I agree with you in spirit, but you cannot expect people at scale to be able to resist these things anymore.

That's exactly it. There are already things which come close to achieving that, which is basically anything sold as a movement that happens to encourage getting off social media, like the motivational Chad Zyzz memes or Jordan Peterson or whatever. Not ideal but it's by far the closest you can get.
It's just impossible to get the majority of people to be convinced to perform introspection.

I think it's understandable to ban TikTok for being spyware, but not like in a "the government is doing the people a favor!" way, it's just understandable that the US doesn't want other countries spying on them, we can just do it to ourselves.
But I think anyone who thinks it deserves to be banned because of how addictive it is should get a grip, we've literally been trying to make our own TikToks with shit like Youtube shorts so even if TikTok is a special brand of internet addiction I don't see how and I don't think most people care.

I'm kind of worried though because I don't want US to just ban its competition but,

if they're gonna ban our shit we might as well ban theirs.

This app must be banned by all the countries. Its a brainwash app and destroys your brain from mindless scrolling and infinite material, fast image switching and infinite options , (dopamine receptors). I was against it since it first launched. I have a strange feeling that these apps (insta yt tiktok) are the most used the last 3 years than ever and their usage increases dramatically. Im afraid that this creates a kind of matrix with bessoted and brainwashed people of all kinds( wannabe sigma males, wannabe alpha bitches-arrogant girls, and other forms of wannabes or showoffs) and this creates a cycle of arrogance, shallowness and undignified actions and views. Hard place to live, but most of the people fall to this because of boredom, lack of purpose and loneliness. I use yt only for knowledge but sometime i fall to the shorts trap. I use instagram because of boredom and lack of contact , soon all will be correct.

If China is fighting for it to stay, it's clearly a security risk.

i would like tiktok to be banned because over the past few months it has seemingly become impossible to browse the internet without seeing shit from tiktok. if it were just cat videos or whatever that would be fine but it's always these weird fake stories that seem to be calibrated to generate the maximum level of engagement by sparking arguments. they're a lot like the fake posts that go viral on plebbit subs like AITA, except there's a human face attached to them... it's social gray goo that outcompetes actual content

If the US government is that worried about tik-tok as a national security risk, I would understand banning it for use by federal employees. However, I think that creating an all-out embargo on Chinese and Russian software will both harm the consumer in the long run, and decrease foreign competition with US products. As much as I may hate the platform as a whole, the information given up by users is voluntary, and it does not seem to be violating any US laws (If it were it would have been banned already). Simply banning a product because I don't like it defeats the whole point of a "free" market.

government bad, laws bad, companies bad, return to monke.
