Bill to Ban TikTok

As I said earlier, if they care so much about China getting a foothold within the US then why tf are the debating about an app rather than them buying up land here? I remember some theory a while back the Chinese were buying up homes near military bases as well but I don't know how true that is, but it's an interesting thought.

But I am not worried about China, I am not worried about the Middle East, nor I am I worried about Russia. The biggest threats are domestic originated and perpetuated by our oligarchs. Only an idiot thinks the same people who sold us out are going to be the ones to get us out of this mess.
Enemies domestic do all the damage that terrorists, and our foreign adversaries dream of doing. From destabilizing the power grid, to killing off wealth building through inflation, and to cyber espionage on civilians and VPN restrictions. Are they gonna restrict agora too?

If you have an alternative perspective/suggested revisions then please let me know so I can incorporate it into the main page. Accurate information in this case is the most damning

Unfortunately it appears neocities is no longer putting me into the main activity page, this was a hunch I had weeks ago, but still, WTF Kyle Drake!
I respect what he created, I am glad he revived the geocities and the old web ideals without trying to capitalize on it with excessive ads and such. His neocities platform is what currently gives me a creative outlet, I am grateful for that. He has made something truly special. But I must say, I am frustrated that my emails go un-returned when I'm asking why I am no longer showing up in the general activity feed for the platform. It frustrates me. Here I am not showing up on the general activity feed when all I wish to do is spread awareness of this RESTRICT Act. aka I am using my platform to spread awareness to something that potentially impacts us all!
If I've passed a threshold for showing up in general activity at least let me know.
If my site name is too controversial, then also let me know.
That's all I ask.
for one thing, the maximum fine is $1,000,000, not $250,000. The 250k fine is apparently only for civil suits. I also compared the reasons of this act being passed to the PATRIOT Act of 2001, which also limited privacy for US citizens.

It's also worth noting here that for technical advisory committees, Chapter 10 of Part I of title 5 does not apply to this act, meaning that Lobbyists can be appointed to the "Technical Advisory Committee".

I almost kind of want this to pass just so I can bear witness to the inevitable and delicious unintended consequences. Think surprise crunch in your food where crunch shouldn't be. :) Except the government breaks down your door and throws you into prison because you accidentally got tricked into using a proxy to access the Eurasian-net which is administered by those who we're currently at war with. We've always been at war with Eurasia.

Also, early March, the White House released a PDF outlining their "National Cybersecurity Strategy". It's a long read, I haven't really begun, yet.

It is an absurd bill, but it will most likely pass. Maybe some of the extreme bits will be shredded, it's a common tactic to propose something absurd and hiding it in something even more absurd. So when the very problematic (that was never meant to pass) part is removed, it will seen like a refined bill that's not extreme at all. Or the fake extreme part was in fact the one straw argument the media will forcus on, and the rest of the bill will just exist in obscurity.

Republics and their mind games, gotta love 'em.

Of course how polarized people are and how big tech basically became total masters of the information flow under coofid, there won't be any significant resistance to this. Also... coofid was the perfect way to condition the population to censorship being the norm. Similar to the Snowden leaks basically de desensitized everybody about the NSA magic.

Also normal people will only see "ban tiktok bill", and WILL NOT know about anything the bill itself, it's content and it's origins. Their opinion will be just parroting their preferred mainstream media outlet.

If you live in the US, I guess write to your rep or something. It won't do much, but almost nothing is infinitely better than nothing at all.

They're coming for your agora folks. It's the literal end of the internet as you know it. The last vestiges of the real net are a danger to their false narratives.
Oh pretty much.

Even if we were a 100% on board with their every idea, they would still crush us (as in people who are not megacorps) because they are maxing out their influence. Just look at how the rich basically creates economic collapses so the lesser ones in their group can have their assets captured by the bigger and ascendant ones.

I am torn on this

I don't really like the government having the right to swoop in and tell me what I can and can't install on my own device "for my own safety". For the same reason I don't like Google telling me what I can and can't install. Which is why I use f-droid.

But I also fucking despise TikTok and less people using it overall is a net positive for society, so I consider this one of those "bad things done for bad reasons that ends up making everyone better off" type deals.

Even if you don't agree with it AT ALL, I would suggest not fighting it in any meaningful capacity, because we're probably all better off with it in place.

The road to heaven is paved with the intentions of people who tried to send us to hell. I dunno. It's weird.

Either you're very young, or incredibly stupid.

It doesn't seem like you're that dumb.

So you're just young.

You don't know.

For fuck's sake, we don't need to decrease the voting age, we need to increase it, 25 minimum.

While I hate TikTok, the glorified child pornography site that it is, I still take issue with your government banning it. The best case scenario for regulating the platform would be strict rules about allowing minors on the site (i.e. not allowed, since that's where most of the damage seems to be).

It would be far more useful to start a public ad campaign about the dangers of internet addiction, skinner box inspired design, and dopamine flooding, but that's never going to happen.

even if tik tok were blocked in all countries, a similar western version would arise, or the audience of tiktok would be absorbed by instagram once again, in any case there is no escape imo

I only support the bill if Youtube, Netflix, Facebook, Twitter, tumblr, dating apps, doordash, Carfax (especially this one), Reality websites, and dating websites are also nuked to oblivion. But especially CARFAX and Kelly Blue book. Fuck those websites
