Closest I got to a Triple A was on beginner Elemental Creation with a bit over 970,000 points. I'm assuming you played this on high speed, yes?
What do you mean by high speed? Most players adjust speed to be higher, but compared to them I use a much slower speed, since I'm used to playing doubles where it's necessary to see a bit more ahead in the chart, else you'll get twisted or if doing nobar you can lose balance and even fall over like a jackass (which nearly happened to me a few times).
But most players never do doubles, they just do singles so their feet don't stray far and there is less potential pattern variety, so they prefer a faster speed.

Might be investing in a DDR machine once it's settled where me and the wife will be staying within the next few years. Anybody have recommendations for the best ones? Price is irrelevant.
Buy a pad and hook it up to a Stepmania setup, that way you can play whatever songs you want for however long you want. DDR/SMX pads and machines are built to last so you can technically just buy entire machines and jerry rig Stepmania to run on them. But you really should just try finding videos on pad performance and come to your own conclusions.

No matter how much you spend on a DDR pad you need to first know it's not a set-and-forget kind of thing. If you want pads at home you need to be quite technically knowledgable to be able to:
  • Regularly replace and calibrate the FSR's in the pad, as well as perform other maintenance when it comes up, so know how to disassemble the pad and be willing to.
  • Set up a Stepmania based software system (I would recommend the derivative, Project Outfox) which will likely require you to know how to troubleshoot software problems.
I can't really say much as I've not bought my own pads before, but I do know, the L-TEK pads are the most popular and one of the cheapest; they are good in terms of ratio of price-to-performance. Only thing with the L-TEK is that the bar is notoriously bad so you may want to find something else to hold onto if you plan to play with bar.
You did say price doesn't matter, but I'm not sure if you realize how much pads can cost you. That doesn't even include the price of the computer, screen, and audio equipment, if that is not already sorted.
Are you and your wife already avid players? and for how long?
