I've sometimes thought about the use of the handwritten word as a proof of humanity. It might be somewhat trite but I'm a romantic, what can you do. As for the problem being the fact that it's thought of as a medium to monetize, I have to +1 that. I've mulled over it for quite a while and got to the same conclusion: the problem is not the internet/web, it's the monetization of it. That's what has caused the consolidation in a few big sites and the homogeneization of content into ready-made easily churned clickbait. As to the "what's the next frontier" question posted in this thread, I believe the internet is the ultimate (noosphere) frontier anyways, since there can always be an unexplored territory in it's immenseness. It'd be as if humans had reached space; it'd always have a frontier because there's always more terrain to explore. It's not as the world, which at some point ran out of new lands. Maybe dark net would be somewhat like it, yes, but dark net is still web (or at least that's what I think - tor still has hypertext and URLs...). The other problem I've found, and I have to be a little bit politically incorrect here, is that the /quality/ of internet users has dropped considerably. You might say "yeah, that's eternal september for you", but I've noticed this has been going on since about 2017? or 2018. This is especially noticeable in the fact that the google algorithm, maybe by google fiat (more on that later) or by the fact that so many people register hits when searching for trash for keywords that someone who is looking for something specific will write. What do I mean by this? Look this: While looking for the precise definition of a technical term, google (which like it or not utterly dominates the search market) brought absolute trash. But of course they would, since most people who look for "web" end up hitting that website so the priority for that (website, term) grows. I changed into a private window and deactivated adblock and such, yet it still was that the main result, which surprised me. It evidently has to do with my region, as wh*tsapp is a giant in this region, but it still is sad to see that such GIGO is happening. Other problems I've noticed with g*ogle is that the results in themselves are pure trash. Sometimes, when looking for a specific tidbit, the results will be related only tangentially, if you're lucky. I call this censorship, and I'm not overstating anything here, because I 100% believe it was manual intervention, as it always happens with "controversial" results. I wish I didn't have to focus so much on a GAFAN megacorp, but the sad state of affairs is such that they can do whatever they want, as they are a monopoly and they can sleep soundly knowing that if a competitor starts getting a serious marketshare they can outright buy them. They have their golden egg goose and they don't care about milking it dry because, going back to the /quality/ thing about web/internet users, they simply don't know any better. The same "lower quality" observation can be done about many monopolies by megacorps (facebook sucks and whatsapp is crap, etc.). So it's an admixture of users who don't know any better and megacorps feeding them crap.
