One of the consequences of the industrial revolution is that the vast majority will be engaging in surrogate activities under a hidden cloud of mind control.
We use the term "surrogate activity" to designate an activity that is directed toward an artificial goal that people set up for themselves merely in order to have some goal to work toward, or let us say, merely for the sake of the "fulfillment" that they get from pursuing the goal. Surrogate Activities in of themselves are not inherently bad and could be a social good, however not all surrogate activities are equal. The Activity of "choice" is like the "choice" you have at a buffet; the activities provided to you are chosen by the establishment which you exist in. To hammer this simple point home consider the reality of the situation once you sit down at a buffet...you have no clue what the quality of the buffet items are and its very likely you dont quite know all the options just the theme. Ultimately the restaurant owner controls what food and most importantly the quality of the food that is served. This is the reality of a managed society in general (which is another consequence of the industrial revolution).
The Surrogate activities which you have on offer are dictated to you from Managers. These Managers are selected naturally via the psychopathic social environment of a post-industrial and "diverse" advanced economy. The Managers selected to be a manager are somewhere on the psychopathic spectrum or they are very good liars. The Internet has ramped up this psychopathic selection to new extremes.

If I were a psychopath and needed to fit in with the wider society on the face level (what I consider to be a psychopathic construct, and yes I consider peoples like the Chinese to be more psychopathic on average because of their face culture), these days I need only goto this website and look at what is upvoted. Upvoted opinions are validated opinions accepted by the larger society (right?? no?!), well they are valid opinions in the sense that if you mentioned them in a corporate environment (the most psychopathic realm), most people will be fine with what you have said and accept them even if they do not agree with it. The existence and acceptance of a corporate environment which is the most psychopathic environment implies that people are willing to accept psychopathic environments if their social standing is at stake. If you were to utter a phrase in a corporate environment which is not accepted you have a risk to lose social standing significantly depending on the phrase uttered and in what seriousness. Phrases and Demenor which is accepted in society is external to the self and must be learned in real time. These are social norms and these are what are ultimately hijacked to control your behaviors. They keep you tied to your surrogate activity of "choice"...choices which are provided to you from a pre-selected variety. If a psychopath wanted to get ahead in society all they need to do is project (no need to follow or actually believe them) accepted social norms into wider society and to not project the non-accepted ones. Rationally a psychopath should be able to measure their change in relative power in society through excersizing certain social norms. Exposing views which have a high risk of social punishment should be withheld. Subversive types will find themselves hitting a wall of raw power... the raw power being that of who is able to dictate social norms which IMO is power itself in human land.
This measure of what constitutes the risk after exposing a view or projecting a social excerisize of any kind is determined externally and your brain keeps this risk table and updates it continually wither or not you are conscious of it. This table of risk is a psychopathic component of the mind which exists in all humans. When you talk to someone new, you naturally desire to uncover their psychopathic table of social norms. A good test to figure out if someone is more psychopathic then normal is if they never actually attempt to find this table in you...a psychopath and or an NPC will never try to challenge this table that you have. Humans capable of empathy are able to read these social norm tables for better or for worse. Ie: Empathy can be used to make your socially accept the concept of genocide ie: Nazis in the WWII. These social norm tables in your brain are the base target of mind control methods. You need not agree, you only need the concept. You cannot fight against this control method because much like reading this line right here the meme has already been planted into your brain. (its interesting how this thought in my brain reaching your brain yet I have said nothing... all I did was press buttons while staring at glass... AIs can do that).
Social norms are not psychopathic inheriently. Consider an elementry school (before kids all had smartphones)... each school and even grade had their own terminologies for all sorts of things. They had goto insults like **** and **** which used to be socially accepted by the wider society before the social norms were forcefully changed via mind control methods (more on that later). Clicks had their own terms. Hobby groups have their own social rules. Social Norms create social hierachies. Those who do not fit in fall in the hierachy. You may think that Children lack empathy and pick on other students as a result... this is actually not true... Bullies actually tend to have higher levels of empathy than those they pick on because the reality of bullying is psychological and the excersize of power...which is the capacity to dictate social norms. Like a Nazi a bully requires high degrees of empathy to suck the soul out of their victim...this soul sucking attribute takes power away from the victim and gives it to the Bully...effectively producing a hierachal relationship where the bully appears more socially valuable in contrast to the victim. This hierachy will always exist in any social environment as humans naturally apply their table of social norms to others around them and compare them and judge them and adapt to them (and unforuntately sometimes impose them) in real time. Humans are social animals, this judgment of others and the live adaption to social norms relates directly to the original sin of man...

You are a Monkey who lives with intersecting social matrices with a complex table of social norms which you update and change on a daily basis. The interactions which you consume is what builds your table of social norms. The Boomer's understanding of social norms arise from Television. This social training on television has made them incredibly naricistic, this is because they watched and empathized with fictional characters going through fictional social events. The most psychopathic forms of television would have to be reality tv. Since reality tv is psychopathic this is the most effective way to control people's minds... ie: update their tables of social norms. Producers of reality tv can literally produce whatever narrative they want. They show what they want to show and they choose sound effects that they want. When you watch television its like going to a buffet, but all the channels are managed and controlled. Again... Who do you think gets to manage these things? Psychos. Think about all the social trials you need to advance through to eventually manage any of these networks let alone managing the gate which enables the networks to broadcast anything at all. The reason why reality tv is so awful is because most of them are designed so that the viewer has a feeling of superiority compared to the certain persons on the TV show. They are actively engaging in judgement...when they do not have anywhere close to the amount of information required to make judgement...and this all happens naturally which you watch TV... this builds the internal psychopathy.
The internet fundamentally changed the game of mind control because you can make it like TV and create pseudo social interactions which appear like a group which you are apart of. Your brain naturally wants to fit in and it naturally changes its world view to be accepting to the group. Now you may still have your fundamental beliefs but if you tune in to reddit
or tiktok, you may get the perspective that these groups are exposing popular opinions or societally accepted opinions... because you dont know what others actually believe you may hide your true beliefs and values to prevent exclusion from a social group. This is fundamentally the root of alienation in a post-industrial world. The fact that you see yourself as a unique individual where the wider society has different worldviews then you is alienation and this is the result of this psychopathic conditioning.
What used to establish social norms before the internet was the radio, tv, and music... they still do... but the internet is superior in mind control. Various applications impose their own mind control elements which update your social norm table and makes you either adapt to the consumption of the current product or you will be alienated by a social matrix that has been ultimately manufactured and subjected to the wider populus.
How does this relate to the OP and surrogate activities? Well once you eventually come to the conclusion that you need to allow yourself to be disconnected by these psychopathic elements (TV, "Music", videos, reddit
, tiktok, alogorthmic content delivery, netflix, etc) you very quickly realize that you are now suffering boredom and lack a purpose in life. You venture out for something to do... but at the end of the day you are still a MONKEY
