I appreciate this thread being bumped, as I must have missed it.

The problem is that people learned how to monetize the internet. Back in the day, it feels like a thousand years ago now, you put up a webpage about something because you were a passionate nerd that was obsessed with subject X. The internet was not primarily about making money. It was all about the free exchange of knowledge and you shared as much as you knew about your area of expertise to everyone and always without restriction, like not having to make a fucking account for the most trivial of things. It was the 'spirit of the internet' as my dad called it. You can still find an abundance of excellent information if you know where to look, far more than then even, but there are so many damn landmines you have to avoid nowadays.

And yet, the solution is out there and it's owning your domain, your webspace and use that as a place to share what you think.
Domains hosters still belong to companies that will take down your site for having "problematic" material like loli hentai or for annoying feds like althchans.

Yes, but some are more resilient than others, depends on who you plan to piss off. You should always keep a backup on Tor, just in case.
You 2 remind me of a rabbit hole I went down nearly a year ago now / discussion I recently had on the now-closed Yesterweb forums. I will revive it here, it was in response to choosing a registrar:

Back when I was setting up my site, I did a little research on this. My understanding is that in terms of top-level domains, ".com" is still king, and that (almost all) registrars sell it. As long as what one is looking for is relatively average, just go with the recommendations from people on here, >redditcostanzayeahrightsmirk, Hacker News, etc.

Once you're willing to start getting a little weird, interesting options pop-up. Are you going to do some crazy stuff with your site and want some anonymity? Njalla will buy (and OWN) the domain on your behalf via a Monero payment. Pretty wild, I think.

Are you willing to drop the ".com" for something more quirky? There's this HN thread I read on "What Is The Most Free TLD?". It seems the original blog post was pretty crap, but the discussion was interesting and introduced me to country-managed registrars like ISNIC (it's both private AND public).

In terms of my personal life, I also vouch for Namecheap. I've used it for years and have yet to encounter problems.

Almost forgot to talk about how ISNIC banned KiwiFarms during the whole fiasco last year, so that blog post saying the TLD is a "most free" one is extra funny now. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

To be fair KiwiFarms exists mostly for doxxing and harassing people they hate. Sure, some of their targets deserve it (like the child groomer tranny that sued them) but many of their targets are just harmless retards. Also most KiwiFarms active members aren't any better with many of them being tranny creeps.

This is something that has always struck me as odd: that although techno libertarianism was the trendy political alignment of the early internet era, and radical individualism was fully embraced, you've never really been able to own your own domain. This is not an example of tech giants coming in and making you pay for something that you had for free before, it's just always been this way. The fact that I can't just buy a domain name and have it as my own for the rest of my life (or until I decide to sell it) like a piece of real estate was a major turn off for me when I first looked into making a personal website long ago. While renting and lease agreements have their place in society, I'm generally more opposed to them philosophically than most people.

I'm admittedly not very knowledgeable regarding the infrastructure of the internet, so it's certainly possible there's a good reason for this arrangement that I'm just unaware of. I'd be interested in knowing the history of how and why we got to this position. The fact that the response to this critique is work-arounds that themselves all have major associated flaws/challenges is itself fascinating. It surprises me that people who care about the personal web and the control that the big corpos have over the internet are not more aligned with actual ownership.

This is my new webpage. I made it for my all links. Why? Because

Well, it was my fault. Being such wet blanket, so undecisive, so
"unrooted" to anything.
Not believing in anything (and anybody, huh) brings, with freedom,
the sense of belonging - to nothing. No ground. Nothing. Just my

(I) Make everyone to laught, but myself. I want to forget myself.
All the mistakes. All coulds. All those times...

Too afraid to do anything. No friends, Just being there. But my
fault. I wanted ("no") help, - but "if you are friends with
everyone, there is something wrong with you." Exquisite
/sarcasm.

Heh, guilt-trip. By myself. What a gift. Prolly thing that keeps
me still going on, even when I do (rather) nothing.

This is my new webpage. I made it for my all links. Why? Because
why not. (Who I play with, I am so lonely...)

Well, it was my fault. Being such wet blanket, so undecisive, so
"unrooted" to anything.
Not believing in anything (and anybody, huh) brings, with freedom,
the sense of belonging - to nothing. No ground. Nothing. Just my
self.

But I lie. There is nothing, then there is no Me. I define as
what, if I believe in no(-)thing and no one? Clown.
(I) Make everyone to laught, but myself. I want to forget myself.
All the mistakes. All coulds. All those times...

Too afraid to do anything. No friends, Just being there. But my
fault. I wanted ("no") help, - but "if you are friends with
everyone, there is something wrong with you." Exquisite
/sarcasm.

Heh, guilt-trip. By myself. What a gift. Prolly thing that keeps
me still going on, even when I do (rather) nothing.
"Fausting" around? IDK TBH how to end this overthinking, this post
even. Bye then, I guess, mleh. Feels bland; bad, maaan...

I'm admittedly not very knowledgeable regarding the infrastructure of the internet, so it's certainly possible there's a good reason for this arrangement that I'm just unaware of.
I think, if you examine what a domain name is and consider how the DNS works then it will become more obvious why you can't own a name in the DNS forever. Is a domain name really the same as real estate?

yeah :/.
net became another f***ing TV (cable-rent and all that). dont let me started how Netfuqxs became, or, proved, what it always was...
Piratefag Master Race!

But yeah, you're right. Especially with YouTube content. Not just from big companies but from sole YouTubers too. For example lots of YouTube make lots of video with drama and gossips for other YouTubers and they make their own circle jerks with one YouTuber sucking each other's cock. Just like traditional tv did all these years with celebrities.

Something like that I guess. By the way what's your definition of MTV-fication?
so, my idea is, 24/7 stream of exaggerated news. you know, what happened with MTV after 2005 i suppose? (idk, i saw it only as kid in 2004, just second-hand experience and reads)

If you don't own land you can't vote or complain.

Only certified Land owners get to have a say on the state of the union.

I care about it, and technically I do have it. Unfortunately it is difficult to find the time to develop and maintain it in the way I would like. In any case my attention span is shattered. Trying to work on that.

Domains hosters still belong to companies that will take down your site for having "problematic" material like loli hentai or for annoying feds like althchans.
Maybe don't put loli hentai up there?

As a domain owning pangolin I think its pretty nice. Too bad im too busy to put up anything in the domain I pay $9 a year for and also have access to AWS(gross I know, but its the only hoster I know). What would I even put on my personal domain thats interesting to others?
