Man, Linux was always used by a minority, just like nowadays. As such the Linux community is stronger than before and there's cool stuff like dwm and all this new suckless software stuff that is appearing.
Some people still use it, certainly. But there was a vague hope back then that it might grow into an actual mainstream OS at some point, and that opportunity is clearly gone. Back then Linux users could fall back on "Well it's new, just wait and see where it goes!" We have now had 2 decades to see where it went. Do we have a valid alternative for Photoshop, Premiere, or any of the other media authoring programs on Linux? Nope. Do we have a solid Office replacement? Just barely. Can you finally play mainstream games, when they come out, with little to no loss in performance? Sometimes, but it's still more of a hassle than on Windows.

Really, it's indicative of the large malaise around Open Source in general. Works great if a few people want to colab on a small bit of hobby software, but absolutely falls apart on anything large. Nearly every major Open Source project eventually either dies or gets co-opted by some corporation.

But I'm getting too serious for this thread. Back to wallpaper.

Valve will use Linux for Steam Deck though. The situation is improving and Blender is even funded by big companies. But i will keep the conversation on another topic.

What's that middle one? Reminds me a lot of Donkey Kong Country
It's a backdrop from Creatures 3. 2 Had similarly great visuals, but these games were really unplayable unless your only aim was to explore as much as possible before your norn died of:
a.) suicide
b.) forgetting how to eat.

Ah, that's what I get for not reading, didn't realize it was all in the file name. Interesting, don't think I saw this back in the day.

I'd love to have salon-table book with these early 3D renders. Maybe the signalwave crowd can pick this up?

Also I'd like to shoutout to my man Zer0 れい, who makes fantastic renders that are strongly inspired on early digital art. https://www.zer0rei.com/

Wow! I had no idea he also dabbled in 3D. He really captured that Bryce3D look with a subtle hint of y2k flair. Love it.

How can that dude make a living off of wallpapers?????? That seems really bizarre. Do enough people actually:
1) Have real computers anymore?
2) Give a damn about wallpaper enough to subscribe to a service?

It just seems wild to me.
