I've had some good experiences with both IRC and tor for general socializing, with this caveat: these spaces are, for historical/cultural reasons, extremely age-segregated these days. Depending on what kind of shit-shooting you're planning to do, this might be a bug or a feature.

Most IRC networks are for unsocial activities such as idling, as Tom mentioned, or for open source development among the greybeards. But there's another class of greybeard that got on IRC for the social potential many years ago, and never left. >redditcostanzayeahrightsmirk's (?) "snoonet" network is an example. These are people who are now 50 but have been chatroom regulars for most of their adult lives. Those chats go something like this:

11:45a gardener: im eating a sandwich
12:37p JackDaRipper: wife mowed the lawn so i can just watch tv... blessed
1:02p steveee: gardener i'm also eating a sandwich. turkey
1:18p gardener: steveee nice man. mine was tuna
1:19p gardener: going to drink a beer later

Is it fun? Not exactly. But I kind of enjoy it in small doses.

Tor chatrooms, by contrast, are filled with younger people that argue about which chatters are pedophiles and glowies. Not a single one of them is, of course, but they're all hoping there's one in there. Those ones go like this:

12:45a scrotumlicker: i just pooped my pants
12:46a PedoGirl: FBI OPEN UP
12:46a scrotumlicker: your not fbi
12:47a PedoGirl: your fbi
12:47a fucker: where find porn in dark web
12:47a CHAD: the edgelords are here
12:48a PedGirl: CHAD you're the edgelord

Also fun in small doses. By combining the two, you are sure to diversify your sphere of human contacts and learn a lot in the process.

Those old people chats were happening in AOL chat rooms in like 2017. If you logged in with an AIM account that was once a true AOL dial-up account to AOL 3.0 or higher desktop client, the old people were there. It was pretty bizarre. The old chat rooms were still active like "18 F Home Alone" where the subject was getting a hip replaced. It was the equivalent of hanging out in an abandoned town where a few people remained and just hung out in random places. I thought it was cool I could still log in and chat, but was depressing once I found nothing interesting to chat about. I think if AOL had kept chat rooms going in the AIM client we may have contained the old folks. Maybe that's why the net is a political dumpster fire....we shut down all the legacy services shortly before 2020.

I lurk on dread occasionally and sometimes post on some altchan I found on there.
Also, before anyone says anything, here are the rules of said altchan

Ah yeah, this makes me so sad. Like, I try to be so smart to overthink stuff, but in the end I don't do shit because if I don't do stuff I can't do mistakes. Well yeah, it's so bleak, like, no fun. Need someone crazy don't I...
