Festival Marketplace (c. late 1970s-mid 1980s)

Festival marketplace was an aesthetic common in retail locations during the late 1970s through the end of the '80s. It's known for its warm colors and Midwestern feel, and was seen in malls, grocery stores, and other shopping outlets. It can still be seen in more "outdated" areas.

This aesthetic reminds me of my grandparent's old house. They use to reuse old jam jars and stuff to save money. We also had an Albertson's near my home that was really outdated and had this aesthetic, though it was tired and cheesy looking. I hated it as a kid but now, it gives me a warm, fuzzy feeling.​

The soft use of neon signs is really nice in this, I feel like I don't see that very much nowadays. In general I really like how soft and calm this aesthetic is. I think this is also something that shows up a lot in some vaporwave subgenres, like mallsoft.

I stared at this one so long, I love the mix of functionality and design. The tiles indicate it's a sterile environment for making food, but the tiles also attempt to be as playful as possible despite the inherent sterility of the tiling.

It's definitely a very American-focused aesthetic. I found the tiles in Taiwan to give me a similar feeling (not sure if this is even an image from Taiwan but it reminds me of the residences there):

I love this aesthetic! There was a grocer in the town I grew up in that still had this stuff well into the early 2000's and I have very fond memories as a kid staring up at these soft, country market designs!
