My favorite horror movie is any of the Saw franchise (except jigsaw and Spiral), I love them so much and couldn't decide on one.

although it's not very scary, more tension filled, my favorite horror and zombie flick is 28 days later. The cinematography, music, colors and just general britishness of the film really elevates the atmosphere. It's something I can put on and settle down to watch every so often. Although apparently not many people have watched it, which makes me a bit sad.

The scariest film I have ever seen is Sleep Tight, a Spanish psychological horror one.
It's so unnerving on a visceral level without showing anything remotely gory or jumpscare-ish.
I have been trying to get friends to include it in our Halloween movie nights but they are all turned off by the premise.
(I suggest just watching it without reading anything about it).

Friday the 13th, fittingly, they were the first ones I watched and they all have a special place in my heart in spite (or rather, because) of their flaws. It's a hard pick out all of them, but I remember enjoying Jason Goes to Hell and Freddy vs Jason the most as a teen. I'd also like to add Nightmare On Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge as an honorable mention, it's a guilty pleasure of mine, what with all the baffling directions they went with and the whole homoerotic undertones throughout the entire film, to the point where every film after it just flat out ignores it ever existed.
Can't forgive this classic

While not my favorite, I made the mistake of mentioning A Serbian Film at my old job when the topic of most messed up horror films came up. Five minutes later I hear one of my co workers just shout from the other end of the room "WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU!?"

EDIT:
I thought about it for a minute, and I would have to go with In The Mouth of Madness staring the "Clever Girl" guy from Jurassic Park.

I hardly ever hear a spanish film being considered good, but it sounds nice, I'll check it out.

I also tried to find the scene where Freddy's Head explodes towards the camera, and it looks terrible because it was made for 3d but I couldn't find it. Still, Jason v.s Freddy fucking rocked.

I mean, what the fuck, why would you even mention A Serbian Film to people in general. In general, I don't see films like a Serbian Film, because they are just kind of gore porn. Like August Underground, just gore without a good plot. I prefer movies like Saw, which try to have an actual use of violence. Still, I will check out that In The Mouth of Madness.

Maybe Mandy (2018). Otherwise, I'm into folk-horror. I've seen as much of the genre as I can find.

I still love all the classic slasher films a lot, Friday the 13th, Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Street, Child's Play/Chucky, Scream, all of them really. It's just that they've kind of lost their "horror" and are more silly and campy to me. But honestly, I think my favourite horror movies in the last decade or so have been tied between Color Out of Space (2019), The Ritual (2017), and Mandy (2018) as well like @Taleisin here just said.

My personal fav horror movie is John Carpenter's Prince of Darkness. Most people would probably say any other of Carpenter's works, but there's something about PoD that really tickles me in a way his other films don't, I can't quite put words to it though.

Also the future dream recordings sequences spooked the shit out of me when I first popped it in one night after work and was drifting in and out of sleep. Ended up spilling perfectly good Dr. Pepper and goldfish crackers because of it.
