Should Agora have a category where we move all trash threads to?

I think I understand the purpose of this.

Agora doesn't only have flame wars. It has threads in which someone posts something so spergalicious that it awakens the attention of all trolls on the board. The thread then derails because OP is too autistic to know when to stop replying to the people piling on them.

There's two instances that I've seen - "Male Insecurity" and "Stop Killing Games Movement". They're funny at first, but the game of "poke the sped" gets old at page 38. The threads just pollute the "Latest Posts" sections and spams whoever dared commented on the thread with notifications.

Just dump the board under Hidden internet, or as i said before, - make it newbies-first, maybe as Test, before approval login account registration - kind of hazing, Challenge of Culture...

Could the problem be that people are automatically subscribed to a thread?

Would a default unchecked checkbox under the reply section which says "subscribe to this thread" be the ideal fix which would require less moderation?

If so, I can probably scramble a quick JS fix for this.

It's a good idea, but I have a few questions in terms of logistics. First of all, how will it be decided that a thread is deserving of the helldump? Will it be done through the "report" feature, or will we have to ping a mod and beg them? How will mods distinguish whether to delete or helldump a thread? Personal preference, or request of the user?
modpost.png
Just for transparency - currently when the mod team gets a report we all chime in on it so it's not down to one person. If in doubt IlluminatiPirate gets the last say. We don't actually get all that many reports, and I've seen maybe two since I became a mod.

A lot of the time we stumble across derailed threads and it's mostly by new users bringing in their Twitter/Tumblr/4chan/Discord brain. The recent trend for threads which qualify for the helldump are incel/Christianity vs/sex/bullying-gossip-drama threads. Basically anything that causes enough outrage to farm interaction which is a common brainlet tactic on the widenet.

This is very much based on how things have unfolded recently and it's not policy, but that's the general lay of the land right now.

Maybe I'm in the minority because people seem to hate the guy, but I didn't see any problem with nsequeira's posts.

The thread was fun because he brought some weird opinion that nobody holds. Then he did something few expected and dropped those pics of his outfit, pumping nitrous into the tank. Where do you see stuff like that happening anymore?

It became annoying to me when it turned into a repetitive lolcow milking factory that was stuck in "latest posts".

So the thread had to be killed, but I'd be a little disappointed if we prevented people like nsequeria from posting.

It's not about nsequeria posting, the posting was fine. The problem was the lolcow retarded gossip which surrounded it in the meta. Example: Nesquik posted a video about a child's halloween tombstone decoration. Then in the chat I hear "Nsequeria was pointing and laughing at a child's tombstone" "man what a piece of shit that's so fucked up".

This is mostly coming from nusers who are bringing in this weird outside mentality of groupthink where they're not reading or engaging with anything except meta drama.

Threads are not a problem unless they're empty, pop-quality brainrot, and it's possible to convert any thread into one of these.

This thread is a great example. The topic is "should we make a helldump" and it's slowly being converted back to the popular gossip of the day. The issue is that we have a lot of new users who think the site is a lolcow forum, incel confession sub or Twitter and that is how they engage.

Can my seedmaxxing thread go there?
Case in point.

It is not an active choice to watch a thread, it's only an active choice to unwatch a thread or modify your settings so threads you post in are not default watched, so the default behavior is always to ping everyone who has posted somewhat recently in a dumpsterfire thread to pile back in. This is how you get 21 pages of people making the same posts in a circle and the bullshit spilling out of the thread to everywhere else because slowly everyone on the forum has been sucked into getting pings about it, unless they turned them off.
I completely agree. Still that default behavior is nice and in 99% of threads actually drives more productive discussion
Given that this category would also vastly reduce the visibility of a given thread I don't see why anyone would want to get their thread in it.
I don't know if a Streisand effect would happen with those threads. I don't think anybody will know until it's tried out. If it does happen, the Streisand effect will mean the intents completely backfire.

If the decision can be reversed without too much effort, personally I think it's overall a good idea and worth reviewing it later on to see if it does what it's supposed to do

Then I think how you dealt with that thread was the proper method - by simply closing it. Nice, quiet, and (most importantly) boring.

Take it to the back of the barn and finish it out of view. Publicly executing the thread by putting it in a helldump would make the discussions about nsequeria or Antoine leak into other threads at best, and at the worst make nusers see the helldump as a hall of fame.

If you're going to implement this, it might benefit from a few things.

1. Being set up in a way similar to 4chan's /trash/ board where you have to type in the address in order to access that part of the forum and there is no link to it anywhere else.
2. Killing reacts on further post in the thread after being moved to helldump, or alternatively, having reacts gained on helldump not count towards your total.
3. Having a clear post to mark when in the conversation the thread was moved to helldump

If I've just described a feature that already exists, then that feature is not really visible to the average user, as I have no idea it exists, which then just means it's a case of exposing it better.
It half exist, if you just ignore a post notification for any given thread, the system will stop notifying you of thread updates until you visit the thread again. I don't believe there is anyway to actively filter out threads you don't want to see, though personally I just ignore them and don't visit if I find the thread uninteresting.

Do they? I don't think I've seen him cause the same inflammatory reaction users like Pickleman incited. I thought it was very obvious nobody was taking any of the Male Insecurity thing seriously. I don't know about the chat because I seldomly go there.

I agree with this though, if a thread is deemed bad enough that engagement with it should be cut permanently, then what's the point of moving to a hall of fame section? I think that'd have not so great consequences. Changing the system of threads like that might cause more problems down the line than just having to deal with a few outlier threads once in a while with traditional moderating methods.

/hell/ was just created as a hidden forum and the male insecurity thread was just moved there. it's also no longer read only.
/hell/ - Helldump | Agora Road's Macintosh Cafe
nsequeira's narcissistic ass is going to blow a load when he finds out his retarded ass thread started a whole new subforum lol. This is a good idea though, now just give new accounts a posting limit for a few weeks and the what's new page is saved entirely.

Yes, but make it less of a hall of fame for bad posting. "Hell dump" is too cool, Goatse is too edgy. "Thread Quarantine" or something.

Biggest appeal is removing notifications. Is there a way we can tag threads without moving it to a whole new category in the same way a thread can be locked?
A few proposals:

poop pile
silly sewer
gay gathering
dummy dumpster

Amazing how two decades on people just keep rediscovering FYAD (and never realize what a terrible idea it is)
