So I was over in @selfKaiHarness's Homestuck thread, and I was thinking: It's been a long while since I've played The Genesis Project.

Eh? What's The Genesis project?
Well, to put it simply, it's a fan-made recreation of the Homestuck's iconic fictional game Sburb. It's available on the official website or on Steam, the latter of which I just have for the sake of not having to keep a close eye on updates. The game isn't finished, and it's full of plenty of bugs, but it's still free and highly customizable in terms of in-game and modded content.

So, uh, let's do a session, shall we? I'll be hosting it on the Steam version -- not sure if it makes a difference, but it might -- with the lobby name being "Roadstuck" and the password being "angora"
Time? Eh, whenever works best for everyone. I'm available all day.

I tried playing it once and sadly it's extremely buggy, probability not worth trying an actual playthrough out of it yet.
Happily there's no news of the game being abandoned in any way, so hopefully they will finish the game and we can do an agora road session.

They had a recent update that I haven't had the chance to play yet because there are such fewer players than there were in the past. Not gonna say they fixed everything because I have no way of knowing, but I can't imagine it still suffers from the same greyscreens and falling-through-the-floor glitches that would immediately ruin a session.

Was interested in playing until I read this. I'd be 100% down to play, as long as it's we don't get bogged down by glitches.

Is not only the glitches, but you need to be also a turbonerd of homestuck to find any enjoyment really.

It is true the game is quite buggy and you have to be a homestuck turbo nerd, but it is still a fun experience if you are willing to put up with the game breaking bugs lore friendly features

I havent played since i got rejected to join the art team and me friends lost interest but i am down to give it a crack once again

Not much to the tale, on their discord they have a section if you wish to join their team depending on what positions they have available, artist, programmer, musicians, testers, writers, etc. I decided to try for artist to help out. Good time to mention its all done for free by everyone involved.

Anyway, a member of the art team interviewed me and gave me a few tests, in order it was alchemy of two kinds with objects they told me, it was HOODIE && FISHBOWL and FIREAXE || TELEPHONE

then to make a sprite of a fox, next one was to kill the fox and do a foxsprite.

After it was photobashing some objects, i ended up doing a godzilla poster, a piece of furniture with a little elephant ornament on top of it, a wrench, and some Lord English chicken nuggets. Then alchemized together the godzilla poster the wrench and the Lord English chicken nuggets since the next test was to alchemize some of the items together, i named such combined item LORD WRENCHZILLA.

Last test was to make a scene of a player's planet, free reign, and then slap John Egbert somewhere on it. So i did me planet (Me classpect be The Maid of Hope) that being The Land of Statues and Dreams (LOSAD)

Sadly it wasnt enough, in their words the reasons were that me lineart was too consistent, me color choices too saturated compared to the ones used in the comic, the perspective of the LOSAD piece making John look too big, and they didnt really got the Lord English chicken nuggets. I think they werent satisfied with the animated fox gif either? but i dont quite remember why

They told me i should study the style of the comic more and i could try again after a month, never did tho... and thats why LORD WRENCHZILLA never made it into the game

I can see why they would think the fishbowl hoodie and the phone axe don't match the Homestuck artstyle perfectly, but outside of that I don't see anything wrong with the rest of it. The statues are off, too, but the fox is fucking perfect and you really can't go wrong with photomoshing things like the Godzilla poster/wrench.
Not gonna say they were picky because now that I look more at the statues, they're not done the same way that Hussie does his ben Stiller busts, but they were definitely being picky. You could probably upload these to the workshop and people would eat it up.

What the hell are they talking about, the art is incredible. If you showed it to me out of context I would genuinely not be able to tell it wasn't from some part of the comic I forgot or somehow missed (t. read the whole thing twice)

Update, hope you don't mind lol, showed your art to my gf without any context (she only read up until like act 6 act 6 act 5). First reaction:

Judging by how harsh they were on @HammerKoopa, I can say their """perfectionism""" is probably their biggest obstacle in getting anything done in this game, and is why updates have been so scant.
Now with that said, the game actually switched hands a while ago (maybe a year ago, maybe more?), and there's supposedly a different group of people working on it so maybe they're not as picky as before. Who can say?

In all fairness yeah there are things here and there that doesnt 100% match the homestuck style, i do think the comic has various degrees of cleanliness when it comes to it after 8000 pages across a decade and while i was dissapointed at the time since thats the nature of rejection, i aint really care that much now a days, i do think that even their game has things art wise that dont fit the homestuck style 100% either like the final boss but i do not know if that was new team or old team who added it.

I do like the game tho, its fun for a homestuck nerd and i am exicted to see where it goes.
A new patch was released last month so they are still working on it, and what i played before its fun to fuck around with friends specially in the house building stage. If they can patch all those bugs they have going on about since last i played like; wrong accessories on the connecting players, friends going invisible, and for god sake letting you SAVE YOUR ONLINE SESSION it would be hella. Hope they get to go through that before adding more content.

Yeah, that's another thing too, it's hard to pinpoint exactly how they want you to replicate the style because you could try to replicate it from any point in its run, and they might be expecting its artstyle at a different point from whatever you tried to replicate. That and the fact that it's an unofficial, fan-made game should give you some leeway. It doesn't have to look exactly like the style because that can be a bit hard to pinpoint, and you know damn well that players are going to download over 9,000 mods that completely break the game's art direction. They might as well settle for what looks "good enough" at that point.

I added this game to my library a while back because it looked a little fun. Is it fun to someone who knows nothing about Homestuck? I haven't read anything about it or heard anyone describe it or anything but the game looked OK especially for being free.
