I guess it would become more corporatized and shilled aggressively in every aspect of our lives especially with the COVID pandemic restrictions forcing us to spend more time on the internet than we normally would. I agree with you that people are very samey online, however.
A relative of mine used to be snobbish against social media and social media addicts. Then he finally decided to make a Facebook account during Coronahaux lockdown and he became what he used to mock.

I bet there are many examples like that thanks to lockdowns.

I think people went all over the place in lockdowns. For me, I was still begrudgingly using social media before, cause of events and stuff, but when it became the only method of interacting with the outside world, and also slowly watching everyone go fucking batshit insane, I decided "fuck this" and logged off for good.

No regrats.

I fear that things will only worsen from here. Social media is very powerful. Even those who are aware of it's bad side cannot protect themselves from it as long as they use it. People go there because everyone else is there.

The only thing I can potentially forsee is an evolution of it. It is not inconceivable that in 20 years, everyone will have VR headset and log into the VR equivalent of Facebook (see Meta and their Metaverse attempt).

Another possibility is Augmented Reality, but I think people would be more likely to gravitate toward VR because it's a technology that offers more. Aside from Pokemon Go, I am not aware of any sucessful AR projects.

But yeah, the future ain't looking great.

exactly, we are already creating two parallel societies now. in time, the two will only distance themselves from each other.
I genuinely believe that social media is now solely used as a tool for crowd control, and mass manipulation. The evidence for such is overwhelming. The way which data can be manipulated and the perception of reality shifted. Even now, on this forum, i have no real way of knowing if any of you are real or not. I operate on the assumption that many of you are, whether or not you are feds, or some advertising intern trying to learn more about subcultres is another thing entirely. Thats the real issue I see, that the surface level internet like social media, is consistently manipulated and fed ideas which are perpetuated by bots, troll farms, real people using fake accounts to spread misinfo or even just to shill their products. its not about right v left. that entire politicization of the internet is also intentional. memes that are created by mis-info agents to spread paranoia and distrust of anyone who doesnt agree with you wholeheartedly. it is pure insanity. I want to copy and

I'm so conflicted. Social media used to be looked down on as garbage for weirdo freaks who couldn't socialize. Now its normie and us weirdos look down on the normies for using it. What is the inevitable end point? Is there one? Will social media evolve into something new and we'll go through this exact same struggle all over again?
hate flips like these
politics*, society...
*saw meme on slovak 4chan, but idk the name or if it has one
it went like

2012 -vs- 2020 (or was it 90s/2000s vs 2010/20s...)
leftists hating jabs, police, order... -vs- rightists now doing this...
and vice versa, love of order and hierarchy on one side, vs other - that got flipped too - from rightwing, to (socialistic controlfreaks) leftwing...
