Personally I just assume everything people say on the Internet is a joke until proven otherwise. Keeps me from spending too much time engaging with schizoposts.

Speaking of which, how come some people take everything said online at face value? I've baited people for hours by saying patently outrageous shit, and they kept biting.
That's a good question, perhaps it has something to do with the way we interact with others. Online we aren't getting the same experience (tone, facial expressions, context) and that mixes with the informality of it all (speaking in a way, and about things, you might not talk with strangers irl on) to create a weird zone of confusion.

There are tone indicators, but what is worse is, when you alone don't know how you meant that what you just said. Was it joking, cynicism, was it general(ization) statement, sarcasm, bagetelizarion-? All at once, none? Just notice for no one really?
This happens to me, when I don't know how I feel. Feeling all or none of these at once, I feel like I am writing greentext - that probably never happened, but it still makes you interested - why it wouldn't? Couldn't be life more like that? No more lies, no more pretend, just raw emotion - no façades, no "but"s, no "mean girls". Just, being you, owning it.
/A man can dream, for those are lies, from me to myself...

It's impossible to tell when someone is serious online. Someone may say something completely serious, and someone may say that same thing as a troll thinking no one seriously says that. There's no point interacting with the trolls, so I guess you never reply to anyone if you assume everyone is joking. Or if you do reply, then there's your answer.

But no! That's not true. "The Algorithm" will show you a bunch of toxic drama and celebrity gossip regardless of who you follow.
How much training data have you given the algorithm? It assumes you're a normie at first so it shows you garbage, but over time it gets better. The algorithm doesn't show me any toxic drama or celebrity gossip, just things I'm interested in.

fill your feed with random shit it thinks you'll like, which will likely be politically charged to some degree

the algorithm amorally drives engagement to keep you on the site. it judges interest on your signals, direct or indirect. it is optimized to keep you engaged with the app. doesnt matter what the media is. yt, tiktok fyp, etc. it doesn't matter if you like it, it knows if you engage with it.

if you're easily outraged, the algorithm will rage bait you. if you double tap the thirst traps, you'll get more of them the next time the algorithm retrains. if you reply to the pundit you'll see more pundits. if you are looking for an identity in politics you will be fed the one that you spend the most time exploring, not the one you actually might care about. wikipedia calls this "algorithmic radicalization".

this is why the centralized web feels so dead. it's not appropriate content discovery. it's tiny bits of attention looped back into itself, the feeling of always partially being satiated by content but not finding community within it.

I typically do this but you can find yourself in pretty deep sometimes anyway. Eventually I look around the room and it turns out everyone is taking it dead serious and nobody is in on the joke.

And is it even a joke anymore? A satirist who captures a following that doesn't get that it's a joke is raking in what is the real modern currency; people's attention. They've got an audience and it's better to keep and expand it and grow the money to make a living than to prove a point.

At least that's what I tell myself, because I can't believe some of these ideological grifters really believe some of the stuff they say

Internet centralization served to highlight the problem with democracy. It allowed governments and corporations to apply a robust and scientific method to propaganda in a way that they never could have before. Stalin could never have dreamed of a tool so powerful as the modern internet. TV is nothing by comparison.

You only need to look at the state of normies now. They have been severely damaged by all of this. Their conversation consists mainly of a self-soothing "call and response" cry to determine whether you support the current thing, or if you hold any proscribed thoughts or opinions. They react very badly if you don't give the "proper" response. With "AI" this problem will only get worse.

I think we're approaching a real schism of sorts

[QUOTE="WKYK, post: 77410, member: 5829"

But even better, I propose a large man-made EMP bomb that destroys all technology in the world, forcing people to talk to their friends in real life instead of on the computer screen!
[/QUOTE]

Good one, but destroying the main servers of social media would be esier and more impactful, since the ponential of the net would still be around. Or desimate the 'root' media in question. However it may go we lose some semblence of potential, it's kind of an necessary evil at this point.

I personally that the problems described in the OP are very USA-centric and certainly not global. Considering most countries use the "western internet", you would expect every country to become batshit crazy, but that is simply not the case. I think you guys are thinking that a symptom is the cause. If anything, the internet only emplifies the crazyness of the USA.

Now truth to be told, I am not sure why the USA have those problems in the first place. If I had to guess it is because your country is heavily tribalized whereas other countries see themselves as a whole (save for the rare batshit insane person). That being said everything I know about the USA come from the internet, so my intel might be corrupted a bit.

All I know is that people in Canada do not exhibit the behavior you exhibit. From what I have seen, Japan and France seem to be immune to this as well (but they have they own problem ofc).

the term "Internet centralization" seems to encompass a broad spectrum describing the transitional past, the current present and thus the projected future. which then id ask could it be simply natural progression, and/or an unintended consequence, or even while i place three silver lined beanies on, a manufactured design approach?
Idk, to me it this subject feels like a somewhat recent-ish evaluation, or a call for concern presented alongside other overlapping subjects such as, the dead internet theory. for instance internet centralization? or more simply, internet convenience. as lately ive been mulling over kinda related stuff and it's greatly nuanced dredged in bits and bots of context and idk it's annoying i guess.
it might be true but you know, im going to lurk MOARRRR MOAAAAAAAAAAAAAR MOAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH to digest and observe behaviours as im vaguely suspicious of everything while i drill a faraday cage directly into noggin it may be a mask for another subject, a turn of a deceptive trick like red fishy or whatever else that strikes one fancy, like, croissants!

a topic pertaining to this sorta stuff could be the perceived group dynamics within the social software, social medias, social services, social social social social social social etc., that largely span the centralized net which then ppl may interpret as appropriate to extend further in the non virtual reality social space. e.g. internet leaking irl, influencing actions, beliefs.
which id like to link a written piece that potentially could be used to compare earlier net lessons and experiences to the present:
https://web.archive.org/web/20030713130936/http://shirky.com/writings/group_enemy.html
P.S. i havent read that in a while but it seems relevant to this discussion :lainDance:

I think the big monolithic websites does have something to do with it.

In the late 90s and early 00s people were more used to just switching to another website or forum if you really truly couldn't stand what you were reading.

personally i assume that everything said on the internet or in real life that i encounter literally is directed at me by artist of world, even if the message is an oblique reverse one about how it's not all about me. if it were not meant for me in some way then i would not encounter it. i also assume that everything anybody including me ever says is also a message from artist of world to themself via themself. reading all experiences as a message to yourself is intrinsically valid in my opinion. i also assume the moral contents of all people's lives are equivalent in a broad categorical sense. therefore i infer that the observed condensation and fracturing of social mass reflect some type of real spiritual process occurring within the collective consciousness. i certainly have been having vivid dreams, reduced sleep, high levels of energy confidence intelligence creativity peace and love, regular spiritual contact experiences, and so on, very much so lately; "manic episode" in other words as they would have you call it. i feel it is the ripples of something coming up from below, like a molten continent, now heaving up from under earth, meeting water for the first time, causing much bubble and vapor of cancellation.

ps. i know i have unorthodox viewpoint of untethered solipsistic narcissism and i admit as much so please u no make fun, ok? :kawaiiNacho:

give your viewpoint though if i were to make fun of you that would essentially be an extension of your own self reflection wouldn't it?

exactly and i'm already doing it anyway so it would be redundant, but on the other hand, if it would make you feel better, then it wouldn't really hurt me, so i guess feel free to go ahead if you want to, i sure don't mean to try and tell you what to do :OhISippyn:
