What cancelled sitcom best describes your life?
I don't really relate to any sitcoms I can think of off the top of my head but I'll rattle off some for a gist of my sense of humour; Black Books, All Aussie Adventures, Ren & Stimpy, Red vs Blue (Early seasons before the lore got bloated), Angry Beavers, Big Lez Show and I just recently got into a binge of Foamy the Squirrel since that cracked me the fuck up back in the day. The rants feel preachier than they used to but it's still a fun saga.
What does Vaporwave mean to you?
I might get banhammered for this heresy but I don't care for like 95% of the 80's pop slowed down to a codeine nod style music but I do like that weird mall/utopian style, it's very hit and miss for me though. The visual aesthetics I like more often, stuff like this website, pixel art and shit that reminds me of my youth on the web in the late 2000's to early 2010s where forums were hand crafted before >reddit
and facebook pages became the standardised places for people to discuss their interests/hobbies. Not even counting the forum aspect, I used to spend more time reading individually crafted websites with interesting features placed by people who were passionate enough to put their interests online, now it's all hosted on a handful of major sites that all feel like the same monoculture.
In a nutshell it's like a whole ton of diverse little towns with their unique attributes and demographics have been swallowed up by a few generic cosmopolitan cities filled with individuals trying to superficially carve themselves out from the crowd while simoultaneously shunning any legitimate individuality. Like how the coworkers in American Psycho kept confusing Patrick with Paul Allen. I don't give a fuck about your eggshell white business card or your >reddit
karma or your hot takes you picked up from an "Influencer" authority figure, give me a cacophony of eye-searing flashy gifs and your favourite cringy music autoplaying on your myspace profile any day.
I've grown to loathe minimalist web design, so that's definitely a part of why I'm here and nostalgia, like I think most people here, is definitely a part of it for me. Part of it also is acknowledging that if I'm so sick of the major platforms, continuing to be there while complaining is impotent misery and 4chan wears me down like a pebble in a river of autistic screeching.
What subgenres are you most into?
Currently it's pretty hit or miss, once I see more of it I'll get to know where my tastes are. That reminds me though, there's two Vaporwave artists I've consistently enjoyed, one is Flamingosis and the other is Cybernazi. Not for political reasons, his music just always bopped for me and I'd get a giggle when he'd sample in Hitler speeches, it might be the contrast of retrofuturistic sound effects seasoned with speeches from a 1940's dictator.
How did you find out about this place?
4chan ad.
What do you do for fun?
I live in a relatively small city in northern Australia so there's a fair bit of camping and fishing, not nearly as much as I'd like to. I just got a fish tank I might post pictures of as I stock it with new frens. I spent 90% of last year drinking as my only recreational activity so I'm trying to be less of a dead liver doomer this year and cultivate healthier hobbies. I might post some writing if I finally get around to the projects I've noted down.
That's it for me, I didn't intend to write as much as I did but I hope anyone reading found it pleasant. You have a nice community and I'm happy to be here. Cheers.
