Great idea. I probably can't join next week but hopefully some of the following weeks I can watch. Not sure what kind of movies everybody would like but I love watching horrible movies for some reason. Love on a Leash and Birdemic are absolutely terrible. For more serious recommendations, maybe GATTACA or Parasite?

That was pretty ballin, even if I did miss like half of it. First thing I want to mention is the soundtrack

The percussion, combined with the occasional inorganic sounds, has this particularly primal vibe to it. It's also noticeable in the chanting interspersed every now and then. More than just the soundtrack itself, I would like to appreciate the silence, as well. Often anime rely too heavily on their soundtracks, rarely ever giving space for silence. This film, however, has plenty of it.
I could see a lot of the later things it would inspire while watching it, as well. Everything from the OST to the visuals to the plot struck me most apparently as influencing Kakugo no Susume, personally. I like that series a lot, so of course I'm going to think of that first.


It's obviously anachronistic in terms of both artstyle, and plot. I'm getting a bit ahead of myself here, but this was released just a year or two before the economic bubble burst, right? I could sense a lot of theming that only 80s Japan could really produce. There's quite a stark shift around this period where people were still expecting a lot more growth for the country than what actually happened, and I can easily picture this on the older side of that switch. Again compare this to KnS, just a half of a decade later. While they both occur in dystopias with extremely similar aesthetics, Akira has all of this seemingly infinite city with massive a population, while KnS is a complete wasteland in nearly every aspect of its depiction of the future, and I don't think that I'm just cherry-picking examples here. I'm not going to speak much more on this aspect, since I'm still too uneducated and don't want to sound like a doofus, but that's just the vibe I was getting from it.
