I have been toying with a theroy for some time, that mass communication is an innately parasitic force weather through psychosomatic or spiritual means preys upon both the individual and the collectives psyche. Through observation of my own and others mental condition I have noticed a trend that follows as such. When viewing the internet as a whole, people tend to traffic similar routes and destinations in a way that parallels the minds behavior. People use the internet to satisfy various desires. Pornography satisfies the individuals lust without the need for true sexual contact. Memes and social media satisfy the desire for platonic communication without the need for true group bonding. In a sense the internet provides the most efficient vehicle of curing loneliness without actually being around people. Its soothes the mind and gives comfort and efficient satisfaction like no other. The internet becomes your Mother, your Lover and closest friend without actually providing intimate touch. In other words its an opiate more potent then heroin. everyone is a slave to something, everyone needs something to keep them going; but where the Wired differs from other drugs is that when people are relaxed they become suggestible and think vertically. When you do other drugs the mind reflects upon previously learned information and thinks up solutions to problems through Creativity. With the web the mind cannot do so as it is connected to the words on the screen; taking the information without filter and wiring it to the subconscious. This quite litterly teaches your brain not to think for itself. When people see something with a substantial level of emotion, they remember it even if they dont consciously consider it. Its like taking upon the negative emotional weight of a million strangers simply by observing. This I believe is the cause of such high rates of depression and loneliness amongust young people; who have been observing extreme levels of emotional weight and meaningless information present on the internet since birth. Its an overload of information not applicable to the conscious mind, so it is stored in the subconscious reflected in unseen trauma and inferiority complexes (Hence the current state of /pol/ and memes). Without carrying the weight of a mind filled with useless information, your mental efficiency returns to the status quo people enjoyed before the turn of the millennia. This is an idea that I have been pondering for quite some time.

Thoughts?

scrolling on most social media platforms for more than 5 minutes(especially 'reels') is incredibly overwhelming and mind numbing to say the very least, what social media and such is doing to our next generation as well as our current ones is what i consider an abomination. im deleting my instagram tonight, keeping youtube and twitter for agora posts and music, but i dont wanna find myself scrolling on much of any social media anymore, shit is essentially poison at this stage.

I agree to some extent, although I wouldn't put down the global mental health crisis purely down the network.

I see the network as an expression of globalisation and see that it has a variety of effects. It can reduce our perspectives incredibly easily if we let it and that can lead to affect contagious both good and bad, paranoid and optimistic, depressing or enlightening. But yes I agree that such saturation of input can lead a numbing sensation that is akin to depression itself or simply being overwhelmed, akin to ADD.

I'd suggest that the economic and political flows that lead to the installation of the network into our lives play a large role in the mental health deterioration contagion.

In the UK unemployment is still the biggest driver of male depression (last time I looked), however we also dont have good enough vectors to measure the impact of the Internet as a variable and driver of poor mental health on its own. Its incredibly hard to study as it's so interwoven into daily life.

I agree with you and like the way you've presented ur argument (reads like Morpheus speakslmao), but I think there's more going on than just the Internet as an entity making us more unwell.

Rather ironic that our responses are being measured via the use of such a platform don't you think? To be active in any sense on any platform is playing into what your theory suggests, as I understand it. I do think there is some truth to this, but I cant say for sure how much as I only go based off of personal experience. I wish you luck in developing this theory, and if you end up writing a paper on this please share

Humans have evolved to hunt animals, live in tribes, be outdoors, and have loads of sex; not live in concrete jungles, work office jobs and stare at blue light screens all day. The internet has been blessing and curse to humanity quite frankly, but its quite clear that it may be making us more isolated from the world around us than actually connected. The fact a good chunk of young people need to use the internet to even make friends now is quite telling in itself...

Great insight. I agree. Rather than connect us, as all of these social media companies like to pretend they do, I think social media and the internet in general actually causes us to be more disconnected to both each other and ourselves. Smartphones and social media accounts act as a kind of proxy to connection, but true tangible connection can only come from physical human contact. As long as people see the internet for what it is; a tool, I think we'll be fine. Unfortunately not enough people see it that way at the moment but hopefully they will eventually. I've been noticing recently how my energy levels become depleted after being online, which is why I've started to limit the amount of time I spend on here. There's something demonic about that IMO.

My mind has been weighed down by useless information since I could read. I would read books on anything and everything. Useless trivia, most of it became, but I enjoyed it nonetheless.

The issue is not what information you received, but what you do with the information. If you mindlessly absorb it, if you consider it none, it is useless. If you think, then it becomes useful. It is like a stick. If you stare at the stick and do nothing, it is useless. If you burn the stick, carve the stick, shape the stick, use the stick, it becomes useful.

I do not think social media is the issue, but people. Not to say that social media is not responsible for the degradation it causes, because it is. Just think about it this way: If people never used social media, it wouldn't be a thing.

"I believe that the Internet provides access to an unparalleled level of communication. It is inevitable that such connections will form a kind of collective consciousness. If everyone is connected. Therefore, in this connection, every action will have an invisible impact on all other members of the network. A kind of ripple effect.

That's what I think. I could be wrong."

Hello there, the text above is the output from DeepL Translate.
Apologies if it is erroneous, but I will post my text back to you from same service for comparison.

I definitely concur with your view on collective consciousness arising in such systems. I have come to believe that the Internet may also allow a vector for communication with electromagnetic intelligences that were always there. They just started trying to communicate with us when we entered their "space".

Beginning with the first experimental radiowave broadcasting, they felt a ripple that was previously alien to them, and began to try and respond. Though all such attempts were confounded by the sheer acontexuality of the situation. And, the probable fact that the collective Jungian unconsciouss was now being broadcast into their realm accidentally through the aformentioned "rippling".

Maybe it was percieved as a hostile monstrosity invading their universe. Because our previously weak psychic energy (while constrained by a much higher resitance providing environment} Was suddenly unconstained and crashed into their realm like a gigantic maelstrom, that was free to manifest without answer for many generations. And, eventually they sent their response in the form of "parasitic entity'.

Which was really just a grounding wire, into another type of universe or space. In reality, they are just trying to put out the mother of all fires as humankinds collective refusal to acknowledge, and balance it's own darkness is manifesting in their realm as something akin to the worst scenes of the movie Event Horizon. Or any really chaotic Lovecraftian Elder God end of world scenario.
Or, maybe not.

I've noticed that recently. I've felt energy to do stuff so I think I'll check my notifications on my phone then do something productive and suddenly I am at the end of the notifications and I don't want to move. So problematic being connected

I agree. I think he was more correct saying it's like an opiate. It's not the root of most problems but rather something we use to cope with problems(alienation loneliness hopelessness) and while it soothes those emotions for a bit it makes us end up worse than where we began.
