Is the Personal Web/Neocities actually active?

Been lurking on Neocities for a while but all I seem to run into are abandoned blogs with "Under Construction" pages. Are people actively updating their sites with articles, comments or some other content? Do recommend some active and interesting sites if you want.

I'm looking at videos and tutorials on HTML and seems fun. At least I'll get a new skill out of this, but yeah, seems discouraging to see abandoned sites. Hope there actually are active sites, I'm fascinated by their style and personality, kind of the same reason I'm visiting Agora from time to time: A e s t h e t i c s .

My idea at this point is to make a website to upload my stories and personal literary or movie reviews.

Like most hobbies, it's just a matter of discipline to keep actively updating your site. It's a lot like taking up journaling then neglecting to make entries a week in. Especially applicable analogy considering many personal sites function as blogs.

I won't try to throw stones considering I began my site revamp almost a year ago and haven't worked on it in months. Life just got in the way.

I'm hoping to start working on it again soon. There really isn't that much left undone to the point where I can launch even sooner and keep adding features later; otherwise feature creep is gonna keep me from launching it forever.

Hope we all manage to get consistent. Even the most visited ones in the browse page are abandoned...

you know how normal people can be, they decide one day to start that big project but then proceed to just postpone the thing indefinitely

i guess a lot of people who start a site actually don't know what they could actually post, they have nothing to say in the end, nothing to show

it's funny how human psychology work on the internet, we always tend to view newer content as better than the old one, subconsciously, we can notice it acknowledge how retarded it is but we can't help but feel that way

maybe it ain't too big of a deal that websites stay unupdated for a large amount of time

rather have a small organic population than a million normies and bots. I think the personal web is more "alive" in that sense.
That's an interesting way to view it.

On another note, if a site never gets updated, it will remain a micro-time capsule of the creator's tastes, proclivities, and skills up to that instant until the host shuts down or removes the site. It's always quaint to see an old geocities site of some guy's dog or whatever. So even if they are abandoned, they can serve a purpose in that sense, I suppose.

if the site doesn't get updated doesn't it get taken offline? I mean why would the site owner pay for a site he doesn't update anymore?

If the site is hosted on Neocities for ex., I think they let it be. It's free after all. But If the guy pays hosting, then yeah probably gets taken down fast.

yeah I was confused because I saw some really old sites that didn't get updated still up, and thought not paying for hosting didn't mean the site going down.

Few of the neocities websites are actually useful at being web/sites, they don't really do anything other than be sparkly and cause seizures on epileptics.

They are there but are dead in spirit, zombie websites with nothing to offer other than cheap nostalgia bait.

There are many that aren't and actually provide useful resources or a web/site to be, But they are surrounded by the horde of sparkly garbage and "DIY" square websites.

Neocities is active, but there's WAY too many dead sites still which have basically no content. Normies do this a lot, they want to start something then they just never finish. I've done this before as well, but never for entire websites. As of writing this, I actually have probably posted more on my website than 90% of the userbase (so far 77+ works or more specifically: 7 archived 3DSPaint blogs of mine, 12 articles, 25 status posts, 1 extremely short book, 22 pieces of art, and 10 videos). I would be ok with little if it were quality, but it's never "quality" nor quantity. So what are the Neocities users even doing at this point?

Oh it is. It just has a slower activity, and yeah, as others have said, a whooping 50% of it at least is abandoned. Coming soon (tm) or in construction (tm). Life gets in the way, or people's attention spans just don't follow.

I sometimes go months without posting a blog entry, myself. An empty or barely filled blog/diary page though is a pet peeve of mine.

The thing that annoys me the most with these sites is that they all seem to be somewhat similar, with similar structure, similar webmasters, stupid ass pronouns in the bio... but every now and then you find a really good one with an interesting person. You just have to dig a bit.

A big problem with these websites is that they are a lot of "X wacky web page" except that its not wacky if everybody it wacky its just corny.

A madman in a crazy world its just a citizen.

Then make it!

I've been like this I'll admit, I've made posts over the years saying I'll make a website but then didn't. I was planning to about two months ago, I started writing a CGI application that would format my text files into HTML. One thing led to another, before you know it I'm sitting there with a broken HTTP server I'm writing but still no website. Now, I'm too busy to fix that server.
But, at least it won't be empty when I put it up. I have about 15 articles done or waiting for editing on my laptop, plus my music and poetry.

Why does neocities have to be "active" for you to publish your website? If you published your website on your own server would you be asking if it was active? Look at it as free web hosting, not some kind of community.

I was actually lurking your site for a bit! Saw the 3DS gallery thing though you have it on private, so I actually couldn't see your profile, so I went to see the rest of the site.

You do seem to be actively working on projects though I still don't understand some stuff you put there, like the Vendith (?) thing. Gotta lurk more, I was just reading it from my phone

You're right in that sense, though what I actually meant was: is the "personal web" alive? Are there interesting and continually updating sites in there? Because it looks like a time machine or a meta art project mostly.

I do mean to post stories in there bcs I love the customization offered and the aesthetics, but I do want people to actually read it. Don't wanna throw a stone to an empty sea yk? Substack and Medium seem nice and all, but also a bit boring by comparison.

Still, I'll just make the site, learn my HTML, and at the very least I'll learn a new skill
