The media and tech giants haven't fully been able to get over Trump's victory in 2016. They REALLY like to think of themselves as the gatekeepers of information and that they ultimately decide what the public thinks. I'm not playing armchair psychologist, there really were pundits here who wrote articles scolding other pundits for 'allowing' Trump to get as far as he did prior to election day, even if obviously Clinton was gonna come out on top in the end. The creators of South Park made an entire episode called 'the First Husband' because they had already told people on their show not to vote for Trump and were so certain Clinton would win, and then had to completely remake it after Clinton lost. The massive wave of censorship and data collection increasing tenfold since Trump is a direct result of his victory - he proved beyond doubt that they didn't have as much control over what the public thinks as they thought they did. Since then they've been more paranoid and have attempted to compensate. Expect it to get even worse if Trump wins again next year.
