Found a ton of pogs on an auction listing site. Huge folios, crates and containers of pogs with the starting bid being $10. I don't imagine it gets much higher than that.

The second hand market for pogs is so dead, it's perfect for a hobby. @Junious predicts POGs will make a comeback in 2040, but I reckon it's long over due. Cheap manufacture and an offline collection toy alternative would be huge.

@waffle photos of your collection gives me life. I love seeing all the variety. Those warrior ones look so shitty, like they just dragged any old image into the print program and just hit send.

I'm surprised how many clipart style ones I'm seeing.

The origins of pog in the 1990's was, in my opinion, an attempt by Hawaiian beverage company Meadow Gold to promote their character Pogman the Poglodyte (seen below).

or, as he appears on the juicebox

He appears on pogs in a a wide variety of wacky situations:

In my research on Meadow Hill, I found an anecdote that the pog game was developed by Hawaiian teens based on the Japanese game Mengko, some are shown below:

I was born in the right generation to experience Pogs but they completely passed me by. I never had any as a kid and neither did anyone else I knew. What fascinates me about them as an adult is how out-there some of the designs were, especially the bootleg ones. Milkcap Mania is a treasure trove of bizarre imagery (attached are some of my favorites) and flipping through the site made me wonder what kind of value was assigned to them by kids back in the day. It's one thing to trade Pokemon cards and know that a Charizard is cooler and more valuable than a Metapod, but how do you compare a barbecuing ant to 13th president Millard Filmore, or the OJ Simpson muder weapon, or some random shop owner from the netherlands, or a talking mailbag, or a skeleton warning you not to go to hell?

Another stand-out are the Pogs used by the US AAFES during the Iraq war as "gift certificates" - ordinary nickels, dimes, and quarters were too expensive to transport overseas, so soldiers who bought stuff at a PX were given 5, 10, and 25-cent Pogs as change instead. The artwork is a gold mine of post-9/11 kitsch, but the strategic Burger King deployment Pog and the officially-licensed Enola Gay Pog deserve special places in the Poor Taste Hall of Fame:

I really like the artwork on menko cards, especially the ones of baseball players:

Some fucking top tier posts and research going on over here guys. I'm really enjoying reading all the personal experiences and research you've been doing. I've got my own png pog collection going that I want to make into a webpage. I also found some clear sticky back plastic today! My home made pogs are going up a level.

I'd like to reply more fully later when I'm on my long journey tomorrow and I reread your posts.

I refuse to let this die. My collection WILL BE SEEN.

The '94 Korea Republic was a hell of a team.

Nothing like capitalizing on the mid-90s grunge aesthetic with pogs featuring THE GRUNGER and Jetty Eddie in various activities!

My collection of 10 US States. They must have all come as a 50 pog set that I could punch out from a larger sheet. I can still see the little punch-out tabs around some of them. Liked the holo effect. One observation it looks like JAM CAPS and ZAP Printing were ripping off each others great white shark clipart.

It's shocking how much clipart was in these things. Clipart was everywhere in the 90s but I forgot how much it turned up in POGs.

I really like the biker insects. I've got a few in my png collection already.

The snake ones are really :elonE: striking.

I wonder how they printed onto holographic paper. Was the paper only in the spots of holographics, or was it matte overprinting? We'll need to dissect a pog to find out D:

unrelated but the guy of that pic looks awfully similar to my business administration class professor lol.
He does a crime against bakery in that photoset. Would not recommend if you want to see your professor in the same light.

If it works like some of the stuff I had as a kid, it's a layer of holographic material underneath the top matte print. Some of the stuff I remember having as a kid also had a sort of double holograph set up where the top layer had it's own holograph pattern intermixed into it's matte layered over a pure hologram layer... man I haven't thought about that in a while.

Wow! Did you find out by close observation or did you peel your POG apart?

I picked up some leaflets with dinosaurs and cool text on them this weekend to make new pogs. Excited to do it.

wh-where are u getting these. Also no one helpped finishing the pog-ject :-(
I'm making them on my phone. The images are sourced from the opening frames of a porn photoshoot. The acting is hammy enough to exaggerate the meme. Brilliant.

Sorry, I'm stuck on a train in deepest darkest Wales (it's sunset and there's a field full of rapeseed and a little stream and a constant influx of alt-girl passengers, I have a playlist of Vaporwave from @HammerKoopa. It's actually kino as fuck).

I'll be back at my keyboard and contribute to your autism when I've cleared my desk of work crust.

POGs have transcended the physical realm, and now we can collect circular PNGs. It's fun because they're small objects that fit nicely into the hand, can be won and lost in epic battles which damage the POGs, and creating POGs is a practice of observation and curation. Back in the day the only way to know what was available in POGs was to trade them with your friends. Now we lurk the internet and old collections like archaeologists in search of what once was. It's tacky, kitsch and 74% ironic.

Have two more POG memes that I made.
