Just rewatched Wicked City for the first time in six or seven years (you know, the anime from that what you won't do for love video and is basically the only reason I watched it in the first place and know of its existence), and it's about as good as I remember.

Story leaves a bit to be desired, but the presentation is fantastic (if you don't mind nonstop tiddies and just barely censored sex scenes). Great example of pre-2000s animation and executed pretty beautifully.
Very clearly pre-porygon, which I find amusing. You can immediately tell the age of a show or movie based on how bad the flashing lights are, and there's a scene in particular where it feels like nothing but a solid 40 seconds or so of the animators trying to induce a seizure.

Seconding Golden Boy, Great Teacher Onizuka.

In no particular order:
Riding Bean (Mr. Bean shoots guns, rides cars and fondles anime titties)
Chobits (catgirl rawbutts)
DNA² (cyberpunk assassin goddess from the future gets cold feet, decides to hold hands with the target a.k.a. our lustrous hero )
Saber Marionette J (dude imagine if your pa's sex dolls gained sentience wouldn't that be funny? haha btw it's neofeudal future not-Japan populated exclusively by gay test tube babies - hence the need for dolls)
Blue Sub 6 (FISH PUSSY I NEED FISH PUSSY AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA)

Also this mad lad managed to cuck YT's content ID and fill his channel up to the wazoo with classic animu.

Exactly as the title says, discuss any anime from before the 2000's here. Movies, OVA's and anime series all are welcome! We'll even tolerate very early 2000's as well.

Some general questions I'm curious about:

1) What are your favorite anime from this period?
2) What is the most obscure anime in this timeframe that you love?

And last but not least, CEL animation > CGI anime, the one fact of life.
When it comes to anime from the time of the Toonami High Ages, there's several trifectas that I remember being still fun, cool, and awesome. Most of these are particularly well-known, but there's some that I'm keen on.

Space Western Trio: Cowboy Bebop, Outlaw Star, Trigun
Cool California Kid Trio: YuYu Hakusho, Ruroni Kenshin, Initial D
Big Robots (Without Taste) Trio - Robotech, Gundam Wing, Big O.

I'm primarily a mecha fan, so a lot of my favorites are a little more "out there" compared to where many started at the time, and many cross over into the 2000's since there were still several passable shows made during that time. For big robots, I love Mobile Suit Gundam: 0079, Panzer World Galient, RaXephon, Zeta Gundam, Getter Robo/Getter Robo Armageddon, Aura Battler Dunbine, and the Tetsujin 28 remake.

My personal favorite of all time has to be the original Mobile Suit Gundam from 1979. It's dated and doesn't look amazing by modern standards, but it was one of the first true "war story" anime's to tell an actual story with humanized characters and proof that Yoshiyuki Tomino knew what he was doing. I recommend watching erstwhile less-visited shows like City Hunter, Saint Seiya, Record of Lodoss War, Serial Experiments Lain, and Armitage III.

Cowboy bebop, Outlaw star, Trigun, Sailor moon, Dragon ball (not so much Z, but okay, kinda Z sometimes) Evangelion. Those were some of my first anime's. Also was blessed to see Vampire Hunter D, Devil Hunter Yohko, Sol Bianca, and a few more obscure titles as a young teen at a very great sleepover. One of my favorite one's lately is Samurai X Trust and Betrayal, the OVA / miniseries from 1999. Great action scenes - deep philosophy about the proper application of power and authority - and even little backgrounds that will only exist for a second or less are beautiful.

Have to echo a lot of the things already said in this thread. I'm a big fan of all things Gundam, DBZ, Rurouni Kenshin, Cowboy Bebop, etc. Pretty much anything that got a lot of play on Toonami, I gravitated toward.

I think it's safe to say that it was a true golden age of anime. The shows hold up, and the aesthetic/style is solidified into world culture, to this day.
