It's always been interesting to me that what we consider extremely schizophrenic behavior now was considered extremely scholarly work a few hundred years ago. There's all sorts of treatises on magic full of grids of letters and letter to number correspondences and biblical numerology is still a pretty active field.

As someone who studied Latin and Ancient Greek (in high school thoughtalbeit) it always struck me how very cynical people in charge of charge of tens of thousands of men and their lives suddenly got very superstitious when their divination chicken didn't eat their feed. Considering how easy it was to overfeed chicken it's probably that they just fed them more once they got reports of how big a certain army they were going against was.
