The French government is expected to announce the banning of smoking in France. Smokers and non-smokers alike are outraged at this new piece of legislation as it infringes on the freedoms of individuals for the sake of protecting their health. The process will be gradual but eventually it will be impossible for any Frenchman to buy a packet of cigarettes. A similar policy has already been introduced in New Zealand.

I don't know where you found that, but it's fake. I live in France and the government has never announced such a thing.

Nobody likes a nanny state. Let those who are weak light up a fag and smoke till their lungs turns black. A nanny state is just an excuse for the state to intrude in people's lives and to make their lives worse overall. A good compromise is to let those who smoke pay their own medical bills American style. No nanny state needed. Bankruptcy from healthcare will correct any smoker. Here in America, while smoking does have a somewhat cool appeal, in reality only those of the lower economic strata engage in tobacco products. The rich, are more likely to engage in fancy and expensive cuban cigars. I am not going to debate the health benefits of smoking tobbaco, as the negative effects are well understood and do not need repeating.

The problem is that nanny states encourage intrusion of the state into the lives of people. It implies that the state knows more than the people it will force this bad law upon. As if that weren't enough, it also greases the slippery slope of further nanny actions. The facists behind the ban will take the implementation of the tobbaco ban, and use it to help pass further nanny state laws. If banning x was successful, lets ban Y as well. No. As if that weren't trouble enough, it also encourages the formation of a black market for these products. Laws do not halt illegal activity, they only increase the costs of transacting in that business. Literally, laws prohibiting an item help to make it more lucrative to engage in that behavior.

Just like with the war on drugs and the fabulous profits raked in by cartels worldwide. Someone is always willing to engage in that activity to make that profit. The war on drugs has been a miserable abject failure of the highest order, but those who benefit will do anything to retain the status quo. I will spare the deets on the war on drugs, because everyone already knows.

Smokers are the most oppressed minority, next to gamers of course.

Joking aside, I find it funny how much smoking gets demonized now by governments and the medical field yet giving stuff like puberty blockers to kids is AOK in their books.

op's is an interesting mental exercise. consider that france has backed itself ideologically into an inability to enact such a ban: on one hand a nanny state wants to nanny state, but on the other hand a french muslim can do no harm. the two are at odds, and considering that hookah is a national pass time for the muslim french majority, you can't actually ban tobacco. but politicians have become so bad at their job, that they would unironically enact such a law, just to discover what i stated above, and then have to backpedal in the most awkward way ("smoking is still bad! but but but..!")

To be honest they don't have to ban smoking, they already tax tobacco so much that it is nearly impossible to smoke without having to sell your kidney if you don't live near the Luxembourg, Switerland or Andorre border
