To those of you that didn't grow in the US during the 90s and 80s, whats your connection to vaporwave and such?

I grew up in a small town in Brazil, but because my dad was a major geek, and loved tech, i was blessed (or cursed) by an early acess to the internet, at least by my country's standards.
This caused my only conection to the cultural climate of the 90s to become old internet forums, Tibia, some cartoons, and old bands like A-ha, bee gees, and such. And while they were present, and i can relate to the nostalgia surrounding them, i feel a more intimate connection to the 90s Brazil, Tim Maia, Seu Jorge, and other samba groups, old comics like Turma da Mônica and Zé Carioca, the animated adaptation of Dungeons & Dragons (named here as Caverna do Dragão), old anime like Dragon Ball, Saint Seya, YuGiOh, and some old TV shows from TV Globo and stuff
So, i was wondering the way you guys relate to this time period, and the things from your respective countries that you have nostalgia and associate with the good old days

I just enjoy independent electronic music. Vaporwave has turned into a decent umbrella term for musicians that want a place for their new ideas to be given a shot. It's a lot of fun to explore and hear what someone makes when they don't have expectations for what is and isn't allowed.

i agree, i also love how vaporwave became more "generic" this way musicians don't have to stick to a specific genre and theme

do you wanna share something that yoy're listening to recently? I love to see what small artists do

Vaporwave provided a new oxygen in the underground scene and many people associate it with Japanese letters, Greek statues, pink color. I am one of the few guys who follow the scene from 2015, that year where vaporwave started to shape(Floral shoppe was the gateway) and that Seapunk genre that faded to obscurity. Now the same thing is happening with Hyperpop. My favourite subgenre is future funk. But there is more stuff that isn't USA or/and Japan centric.

that's why I'm here. I never sample, I don't fall into any trapping of vw audio. but I love the aesthetic and the community openness and acceptance

I feel false nostalgia while listening it..... Hm. Or maybe not entirely false? Maybe it's more some nostalgia for childhood in the 2000s mixed with the dream of living in the 80s & 90s and a bit of envy, because I was born in small backward European country instead of in the USA. Anyway, I like this mood (even if there is often sadness in it). I like aesthetics too.

I grew up in Canada in the 80s and 90s which is just the US but with public health care, less guns and religion and worse freedom of speech laws.
