I discovered this by accident thanks to the ability of Notepad++ to make replacements to all files in a folder, there were a lot of changes and an image turned out tweaked. Decided to try it on a file from https://forum.agoraroad.com/index.php?whats-new/media/153057/ and it turns out it doesn't work on .png files (if you make some minor change in the middle, only half of the image will show), and .jpg files can turn out corrupt but interesting results are possible. So how it works: install Notepad++, right-click a .jpg and click on Edit with Notepad++, click Search -> Replace, save and undo if it turned out bad. In this case I replaced Ì with I.

Result:

I decided to try it on an animated .gif next, replacing Ý with Y and result is absolutely trippy, didn't work on imgur at first but after I opened and saved it with Photoshop it did.

edit: hey look, it works on .psd files too

Try only changing content after the header section (first 30 lines or so) to prevent file corruption. Also you should look into using a hex editor like HxD for more control, especially if working with sound files.

Have fun with your low-level photoshop!

thanks, btw, I tried replacing a character with 2 characters and even preserving the header it turns out corrupt, however I tried saving an image, https://forum.agoraroad.com/index.php?media/1653043244177-png.9916 as .bmp Replacing single characters is barely noticeable but replacing to 2 characters:

Lmao, to be honest I have no idea
I just kept changing letters till I found a section where it wouldn't do that
approximate area of that section?

there's this hex editor for Notepad++:

making a single change in hex can alter colors like this in https://forum.agoraroad.com/index.php?media/1653043224851-png.9915/:

but it's as likely to mess it up, in a different way though:

edit: guess it depends on the image, https://forum.agoraroad.com/index.php?media/1653043320765-png.9920/ has potential for major color changes

so I can try random manga pages (back to plain changes, not hex)

most are .jpg but can be saved as .png

interesting how much it varies on the file.
in the case of manga, a different page will have a similar effect though:

I wonder why, it is different if you save the .png as interlaced before editing though, looks better:
