Just make sure you have 'Downloading' enabled in the Game Settings menu (it should be already).
Thanks for the heads up. I didn't have qwpak* before but now I do. Btw should it be asking for a CD key when I boot it up and then not complaining when I enter nothing?

wait. what are the "qwpak*" files? do i get them from your version rn or will it auto download?
for context i compiled the program from source and ripped the files from the steamunlocked download

In the canned files, you can download them, and they're in there, along with the rest of the .pak files
You guys are right the QWpaks aren't strictly speaking the Vanilla install. I've included everything you'll need server side, as long download sync is enabled we should be good.

Having additional player models and paks should not cause any error on the client or server side. Your custom player models just won't be seen and you'll default to the Sarge model until I add them server side.



Please be patient with your sysadmin while we get our bearings! I have not hosted like this in many years and we'll smooth out any bugs.

That was fun, Had to drop out early but still had a good time.
Lag was a little rough at 200-250ms but I got used to it, even won one rocket hypercube match (by sheer skill of course, this wasn't my first time playing Quake at all!)

I really enjoyed playing Quake 3 for the first time with you guys! Hope to see more in the future, and thanks again to Waffle for hosting it. By the way, here's some random technical tips that I used to fix issues on my Arch Linux machine.



First of all, here's a problem faced by everyone. By default, Quake 3 doesn't allow automatically downloading maps from the server. If the server switches to a custom map and this setting is off, you'll immediately get kicked from it. This setting is just a simple toggle you can find at the bottom of Setup > Game Options.



Second, I noticed that map downloads were very slow for me (like 80 Kb/s). I imagine this probably a side-effect of the server's network troubles, but I feel like it improved when I changed the data rate to 56k or ISDN. Since this was just observational though, there's a chance I just perceived a greater difference than there was. It might still be worth a shot though. You can find this option under Setup > System > Network.



Finally, here's a tip that's more specific to setups like mine. If you're running the game inside Gamescope, you might encounter an issue where the game handles your mouse incorrectly. Mine was essentially stuck inverted, regardless of what I set in the game's settings. I managed to fix this by telling Gamescope to forcibly grab my cursor. To do this, simply call Gamescope using the --force-grab-cursor flag. This problem is probably just happening because I'm using Hyprland as my window manager, but it might be useful to one of you.

Arch Linux setup guide:
  1. Install the ioquake3-git package from the AUR
  2. Download waffle's canned github package, and move all the .pak files found in baseq3 in the canned github package, into /opt/quake3/baseq3
  3. Run the game. The game binary is called quake3. Your config files are found in ~/.q3a/baseq3/q3config.cfg. I recommend changing your resolution size here.
  4. When you launch the game, enable downloading files from servers, otherwise you'll have issues if any files need downloading.
NOTE: These were the steps I followed since I run the game under X11/Xorg. If you're using wayland, these steps might differ.

  • Excessive Plus (E+) - Network/Latency/Lag improvements plus many new game-types and enhancements!
  • BFG Edition - Map, texture, sound, character model upscaling. Looks really sharp in 1080p.
  • More Custom Player Models
