So how much time of your day does it take compared to a wagie slavie job?
As much time as it takes for you to make the money you need. That's one of the best parts of doing contract work. Most of the time you'll get paid for the work you do rather than getting paid hourly, and you can set your own prices too. If you need X amount of money this month then you do Y amount of work at pretty much your own pace. If you want more/less money at some point, then you can just adjust your workload accordingly by dropping/picking up clients. You'll never have to tell your friends "Sorry guys I can't go out tonight. I have work." ever again because you set your own schedule and you're not tied down to an office.

Also, you have a lot more freedom when it comes to how you want to spend your money because you're not stuck waiting for a paycheck on a certain day every month. If you want to go ham one weekend and blow loads of money going out and partying, you can work super hard during the week and earn that extra money for the weekend without having to wait and save over time.

That being said though, contract work isn't for everyone. With greater financial freedom comes greater responsibility. You have to be your own manager, accountant, and secretary. Meaning you can't just do the work you're given and forget about it when you're done. You always have to be communicating with people and making connections to maintain good business relationships with your present and future clients. Keeping track of your finances is also much more important as a contract worker than as a wagie. . Your income will fluctuate based on how many clients you have at any given time, and that's not always under your control. So sometimes you'll have to make sacrifices that even the poorest wagie would never have to deal with. But the advantage is that these are always temporary. And with good management skills and planning, you won't run into these situations often.

But by far the biggest advantage of contract work in my opinion, is the opportunity for growth. The more work you do, the more connections you make and the more opportunities you have. If you do a superb job at something, your skill is less likely to go unnoticed or be taken for granted by your client. Since they actively looked for someone like you to do a particular job, if you do it well it makes them feel like they made a good choice in hiring you. And so they're more likely to reward you with more work/better pay and recommend you to others.

All the horror stories about wage slavery makes me glad I got a comfy WFH software development job and never worked an honest wage slave hour in my life. It might not be development on things that are super interesting, but at least it's a solid 9-5 without the commute and without all the angry people with an axe they want to grind. The money is pretty average, but it's certainly a lot better than selling my soul

I used to work an industrial manufacturing gig during the summer before I graduated High School. It was painful because all the machines I operated were built for people who were like 5'5", but it wasn't bad. Just listen to music and make boxes out of corrugated cardboard or plastic wasn't half bad. The whole "Mexicans doing underpaid blue collar work" meme was totally real, and one of the guys who worked there I kid you not was a 60 year old man with a ratty Mohawk and one eye. Dude had no ID on him at all, totally off the grid illegal. Great guy though, hell of a sewer.

In the end though the company was bought out by a larger conglomerate, who proceeded to fire most of the workforce, establish high-tech systems(the most high-tech most of these guys knew was a punch card machine) and run it into the ground. Was planning on working there again, but a lot of the people I knew don't work there anymore. Plus corporatization just ruined the place. Now it's mostly temp workers who don't give a shit, and corporate suites who don't know shit.

I wish they wouldn't force walmart employees to wear that gay vest. Its humiliating and demeaning and whoever thought it up has a place in hell waiting for them. Here's an idea, let them wear a neon colored t-shirt with a name-tag. Neon blue for walmart.

There was a time when Walmart wanted to be Target, so they did away with the vests and let floor associates wear just navy blue t-shirts with their badge. I assume they stopped because (a) it looked mildly unprofessional, which only upper-crust boomers complain about (but they will complain about it), and (b) customers would ask anyone in a blue-adjacent shirt, "Do you work here?" It was also more difficult for the regulars to discern whether I was on the clock or not - I could be there in a red shirt and still get asked where the insect repellent is.

Source: used to work at Walmart during the summers.

I had a ex girl friend mom whole job to coach day care centers to get a better rating. The rate system didn't matter and once you get to the impossible 4 star you can't get to increase prices. The local government would give you a star or certificate. If you get a zero no shutdown. Like her whole job was made up by a few lines of a bill. She kept saying she was not replaceable but there are lots of people who replaced her after she went on a vacation. To even make her job even more useless from 2020 they closed it and payed them to do paperwork from another department. Last I heard they have the whole program under review
