Right now I've been playing NiGHTS Into Dreams and even though I suck ass, the visuals and music make it more than worth it. Especially the Sega Saturn mode, where all the collectibles and enemies are 2d.

Bump

I will never tire of the neon-lit nightmare that is Kane and Lynch 2 - The violence, the garish colors, the Liveleak-esque shaky cam... all so compelling. It'd be cool to see other games expand on the concept.

Seriously, Ion Fury.

Built on the build engine, this is A Grade nostalgia and aesthetic for me.

Very funny too.

The mall level even has the most amazing mall music for the wave artists to sample.

I'm lovin' this renaissance of the 3D platformers. There's a new one out called "Castle On the Coast". Not only is it a blast to play but holy heck are the visuals sick. I'm convinced the developers are vaporwave fans

Bumping this because I wanted to talk about the aesthetics of Wario Land 4. I love the way Wario Land 4 looks aesthetically and I don't think Nintendo made anything quite like it before or after. The entire game, the music, graphics, sound effects, etc, are like some bizarre fever dream. I guess they kind of tried to recreate it with Wario Ware, but that was more wacky than creepy like Wario Land 4. Look at this shit, it's an evil looking jacked elf man with a perma-pedo smile fighting nightmarish creatures in a subterranean hellscape.

Look at that bat/dog thing. He hits the water and likes it so much he looks like he's cumming. Why are Wario's head and muscles so comically big? What the fuck is happening here? The entire game is absolute nightmare fuel.

I would say Gorogoa. The aesthetic is so abstract that it would establish an aesthetic of its own. It's the turkish delight of indies, short and beautiful and you would want more. I rarely see indie games that set the bar high in terms of creativity.

As far as art direction goes, I'd say it did cyberpunk way better than Cyberpunk 2077 ever did.

For a game released in '97... I think it puts a lot of modern AAA games to shame. Never actually played too far into it, but damn is it pretty. Apparently it was mostly modelled with NURBS, not polygons which is just wild to me.

I have no idea what kind of Faustian bargain Square had to make to get a game looking this good on the PS1, but, I'd say it was worth it. Definitely worth studying, if anyone's interested in low-poly modelling.

For me it's Art of Rally these days. I spend more time than I care to admit getting really good in game photos/replays. Love the minimal cel shaded look to this game. Really beautiful and relaxing game all around.

EYE is one of those games I feel like I will never be able to fully appreciate. Everytime I come back to it I realize a whole new level of depth.
