Title says all, I just wanna know how you guys use your spare time/free time. I have alot of free time now, as I am still waiting for job application etc. In this time I just do absolutely nothing. The weather is getting a bit nicer and thinking about taking a walk, but I dislike seeing people I know on my walk (I live in a town where most know eachother) and usually I don't wanna talk when I'm on a walk. This way I take night walks, same goes for gym. I go to a small gym, with alot of members. Everything's always busy and taken and u can't even move there, so I go in the middle of the night, suprisingly it can still be busy because there will be people I know which I try to avoid hard, also making me avoid my routine cuz I can't do a specific excersise.

Anywho, too much off track. I'm looking for things to do in your free time, because I am sick of playing vidya all day and watching youtube or whatever. I also don't have the attention span yet to read a book, I used to, but not anymore. I just want something to do, I used to have a mushroom hobby, but don't do alot of it anymore.

  • Brainrot activities

Unfortunately, I waste plenty of time on youtube but I'm trying to get better about it. That being said I'm working on making a game with some people so I hope to muster up some motivation to work on it more often. Currently at only a couple hours a week when I meet with the other programmer on the team. I've also been meaning to make a song mashup of Oh What a Night by Frankie Valli and Classic by MKTO. I made 2 song mashups during covid that I would link here except it would doxx me because I uploaded them to my personal youtube account.

r/audiodrama is a good place to check out for recommendations on radio-show-esque style podcasts. Personally I would recommend Wolf359 and Magnus Archives (although MA ends in a terrible and unsatisfactory way imo) to start out. I'll also recommend Call of the Void but really only because the person who made it was the photographer for my wedding and now at any wedding my wife and I go to where she's the photographer she always makes sure to get a picture of us dancing. I think the production quality is kind of amateur (understandable, given that it's their first audiodrama) but a lot of people like it and it gained quite a bit of notoriety on the subreddit.

Audiobooks and podcast:
I will either listen to something paranormal or conspiracy related e.g "Stuff they don't want you to know" or "The Last Podcast on the left". Books are random, currently going through Tolkien's Lord of the Rings

Brainrot;
Steam sale browsing (rarely buy anything), Video Games like Vampire Survivors or Slay The Spire

Dnd;
Yeah it can be fun, but whenever you have that "One Guy" playing just makes it a miserable experience and it's better to not play at all.

I work long hours so I lose a lot of time to that and chores, but I have the following hobbies (aside from reading):
Gardening (including houseplants)
Writing/playing music
Mahjong
Fishing
Sewing

I also want to get back into rock climbing. I wouldn't consider these hobbies of mine but learning a new recipe or doing a home DIY project is a great way to pass time and you'll also get some useful skills out of it. It might also be useful to do something you don't often get a chance to that's more of a chore, like deep cleaning or better organizing your house. You could also maybe volunteer somewhere?

holy crap bro that has to be the comfiest set of hobbies I've ever come across, they sound amazing. Do you have physical mahjong tiles or do you play on the computer?
I play online. I'm not opposed to playing in person but I just don't know enough people into it to do it. Nice mahjong sets can get expensive too.

I have an insane list going lol. Most of which I haven't listened to though as I have a hard time finishing audiodramas. I've only finished 5 ever but I have about 50 titles saved in a text document
Too relatable, you collect 100's and 100's things in life but never seem to use them all.

I'm kind of in the opposite situation where I feel myself getting older and having a lot less free time than I used to, so I can't pursue all of the things that I wish I could. With that said, keeping a healthy balance in life is very important to me and the strategy that I've found most successful is to have one abstract goal and one concert goal at all times in my life outside of work. Right now my abstract goal is to learn guitar while the concrete goal is to achieve certain numbers in the gym. I like this method because it gives you enjoyable challenges to work on outside of work, which can help keep you from scrolling your life away. This keeps your mind engaged and prevents you from subconsciously associating thinking hard exclusively with work. Additionally, I've found that for me personally that I tend to abandon the abstract goals because there inherently no finish line to cross and feel a sense of accomplishment. So having concrete, numbers based goals in the shorter term aids in staying motivated broadly as that sense of accomplishment is felt more frequently.

So the ways in which I like to spend my time include:
  • Lifting/physical health
  • Music (both playing and listening critically)
  • Watching movies
  • Spending time with friends at least twice per month
  • Traveling when possible
Pretty boring and normie, but I'm happy and stable.

Honestly the concept of "free time" has always eluded me a little bit. I always feel like I have to be doing something, even if it doesnt culminate to the goal I want or it ultimately goes to waste. However, as an adult with a full time Job and aspirations, I seem to find very little free time. What I tend to spend my time on now is

FITNESS
(go to the gym 6 days a week, one rest day. The gym helps me so much mentally and physically)

YOUTUBE
(I work on my youtube channel, which includes researching, script writing, editing, filming, writing music and other odds and ends)

thats honestly it, I play video games once a week now and even sometimes I skip it because I feel guilty like I'm wasting time. Really would like to get back to reading and playing single player games as a hobby. I browse here as well but I try to keep my time pretty limited otherwise, I'd be reading every thread and replying a lot more. I tend to feel like I should work as hard as possible now and put in the overtime so that I can relax and not do as much when I'm older. Thats kind of a fantasy but I really belive that youth is wasted on the young and the earlier you start doing something consistently, the better.

WHAT DO YOU DO IN YOUR FREE TIME?
(HOBBIES, THINGS, WHATEVER)

I've been in the same boat for about a month or so, waiting on a lot of job applications to filter through

Recently started playing a lot of go because of boredom. I tried for a while to get into chess, but unless you know a lot of opening theory you're never going to get to a middle game against a decent player. With go, as long as you're aware of a few principles for the opening, you can scrap your way into a middle game and have fun.

Highly recommend, scratched an itch for me.

Based brainrot game, as soon as I realized it was on mobile it was over for me.

I also want to get back into rock climbing.
Extremely underrated workout method. I used to climb so often but due to poor weather and me not having a car I just couldn't make it to the gym all summer. Still if you're able to definitely go climb it's so fun.

I could not be more of an advocate for creation! Whether it's music, art, writing, video game development, or even YouTube videos, you will feel so fulfilled by having something to look back on and see in the future. For me it's a little bit of everything but mostly music and video game development. If you've played an instrument in the past, why not try picking it up again? Or if you're completely new I'd suggest piano, as I think the initial difficulty is less than guitar and the affordability is better than drums (you can get a solid keyboard for like $60, maybe less I haven't bought on recently).

The only thing is if you're going to learn an instrument, take @Orlando Smooth 's advice and make a quantitative goal for yourself: "Learn x song from a video game I like by the end of the week". When you get to the end of the week and have the song down you're gonna feel amazing :)

I'm gonna be straight with you. Most people you meet on a walk, just wanna walk themselves. All you gotta say is "G'day" or give them a nod or a little wave. Make it visible you're listening to music if you're so autistic that speaking to people you see on a walk makes you shut down. As for the gym part, you'll find you can do most of the exercises you want without Gym equipment. Just go to a playground and do Calisthenics. Alternatively if you really want to, turn some room into a gym and get a pull up bar, some weights for deadlifting or curls and whatnot, and do those. I'm pretty sure there's a Calisthenics thread somewhere on the road here.

I agree with Luke in that the Hermetic answer is the highest goal attainable. Nietzsche agrees, as Master Morality is all focused on doing something beyond the limits of regular mediocrity and herds. Even God agrees, as we are made in the image of God- and his prime and first action was creation, and thus our prime and first ideal is creation.

Creation covers a big list of things:
  • Creating art, music, literature. In my case, I have multiple projects in progress, a baroque dungeon synth album, a philosophical-poetic book, games development. All in various stages, but not fit for consumption.
  • Creating a better mind by reading books, engaging in fruitful debates online(I say fruitful because you'll more often find fruitless debates) and articulating things. The person who cannot articulate their own mind to others, effectively has a starved mind- starved by hyperactivity or starved by inactivity.
  • Creating a better body by engaging in exercise, proper diet and proper nutrition. This is more often a case of discipline, and I do try to follow through with this, but every day it is difficult.
  • Creating a better spirit by engaging with philosophy, tasteful art and beauty, poetry and scripture(In my case, The Bible, Dante, German Romanticist Music and Paintings)
  • Creating a better financial situation. Money doesn't cure all qualms, but it can help you cure a lot, and gives you the privilege of allocating resources. Most people don't know anything about economics, and worse don't know anything about basic investment, or how to create passive revenue streams.
  • et al
Even with all that listed, creation can and does involve consumption of other people's creations(and in social situations). This isn't something to be ashamed about if you know it helps in your own construction- but most of what we consume are likened to drugs that induce apathy and languishing of the body, and inducing a hyperactive schizophrenic mind. Anyway, I never can give a straightforward answer can I?

learn an instrument. guitar is fun and yout can start playing most songs in the first couple weeks of playing. bass too. music in general is a good time sinker. you can start learning about synths here https://learningsynths.ableton.com/ . play around with daw free trials and find one you'd like to learn. if you know people in real life start a band.

Lately what I do in my free time has changed a lot. I have less now, and it feels different too
  • Spending time with my girlfriend, either on call or in person.
  • Lurking on Agora or lainchan
  • Reading computer books, playing around with things like servers, some Linux configuration, etc.
  • Currently programming an emulator.
  • Listen to music, these days more so when I am too tired to do work on the train.
  • Dance Dance Revolution
That's pretty much it. I don't watch youtube anymore, I've tried for ages to cut it out and at the moment I'm succeeding.
If this threads was two months ago I could have martial arts or skateboarding on that list, but I got no time for that anymore. My dojo is quite far away, and skateboarding is usually a whole-day affair. It's a shame because I loved both those. Might start going to a gym near my uni to keep up my fitness

It was initially something I wrote to a fellow Agoran in DM's, but which grew to encompass the essence of the larger problem I see as causing this innate sense of anxiety, disaffection, and alienation that you see everywhere in modern society. Upon being restructured into a formal, and more expansive document, it should, I agree, be further broken up into chapters or further subsections. The essence of the missive, if you will, is to identify what causes the spiritual suffering, corpo-conformity of thought, and alienation common in modern society; identify what process created it and in what manner; and lastly to answer, or rather begin to answer, a question that I believe no one has seriously answered before: what should we actually do about it?
