i was thinking about yahoo answers today, and its spiritual successor, quora. as a late millennial, I grew up with Yahoo Answers. it seemed like a permanent fixture of the internet. and more than anything, it epitomized the internet's stupidity. when you clicked on the yahoo answers result on google, you knew that you weren't going to get a useful answer to your question. the answer would probably be wrong, offensive, or illegal. there might not even be an answer, often it was just some guy going off on a schizo rant or a 12 year old telling you that your mom is a whore. and that's what made it magical.

yahoo answers closed on may 4, 2021, after 15 years of service. from a business standpoint, it made sense. sites like quora and stackoverflow had broken yahoo's grip on the question-and-answer niche, and YA had become more of an embarrassment for the company than anything. but the internet lost something on that day.

yahoo answers isn't exactly what comes to mind when most people think of the old web. it was a social media platform controlled by a major tech company and overrun with children and normies - far from the nostalgic ideal of hobbyists using their personal homepages to share knowledge with the world. but it embodied a concept of the internet that is slowly dying as the web is consolidated into a handful of strictly moderated corporate platforms. it's the internet as a chaotic, playful, irreverent space. a place where you can be as dumb and obnoxious as possible because no one can punch you in the face or get you fired for it. a venue for pure stupidity.

"The Internet Makes You Stupid" was Something Awful's tagline back when it was relevant. a similar early 00s take is "The Internet Is For Porn". they weren't wrong. there's a stereotype about youtube comments being awful that persists to this day, even though if you've looked at a youtube comment in the past 10 years it was probably something like "anyone still listening to this song in 2020?" or "wow thanks for this video, I learned so much!". but there really was a time when you could click on a cat video and all of the top comments would be the n word. it was the wild west out there.

at some point advertisers clued into what was going on and decided that they didn't want their clients' products displayed next to gamer words, poorly written fetish RPs and solicitations of illegal activity. and so popular websites were sanitized. a space like Yahoo Answers could not exist today, certainly not under the aegis of a major corporation. there are still sites that embrace this sort of playful stupidity - 4chan, for instance - but it's a self-conscious choice and you have to go looking for them. they don't come to you.

quora was supposed to be the non-stupid version of yahoo answers, but it's still stupid. the difference is that it's joyless. the answers are as content-free as ever, but instead of being self-evidently and hilariously dumb, they're masked behind paragraphs of competent-sounding but banal filler material that is reminiscent of a college freshman struggling to meet the word limit on an essay (or ChatGPT output). this sort of stupidity is palatable to advertisers. it keeps you scrolling instead of closing the tab in disgust. there are no naughty words or problematic notions.

it's not that people stopped having questions like "how is babby formed" or "am i pregananant". they just aren't allowed to express them anymore. the corporations that control the internet want you to believe that it is a serious place where important work gets done, not somewhere to ask "how do you get wine cooler stain out of a diaper". this is why they had to silence Yahoo Answers.

feel free to share your favorite yahoo answers posts here.

Arkazis's website is required viewing for anyone missing the days of Yahoo Answers trolling.

"The internet is serious business!"
Can't exactly pinpoint when the attitude shifted, but it's been pretty lame since then. The implementation of fact checks on consolidated social media platforms really cemented just how much people's perception of the internet has shifted. Guess people have just become over reliant on it. On the plus side, seems like there is no shortage of tech illiterate/non internet savy types actively using the web, and they're easy targets to troll for lulz, but seems like even trolling is kind of a lost art these days.

yahoo answers always felt like a transitory place - an endlessly rotating pool of idiots who would post a question or an answer and then disappear forever. but the site did have a few long-term personalities whose style could be recognized across different accounts. for example, there was a poster from Australia who was obsessed with children committing violence against authority figures, and whether or not this was "cool" or "good":

there's also the fire alarm guy:

but one of the most persistent was the nerd thighs guy:

the nerd thigh guy didn't just stick to yahoo answers. if there's a site that allows users to make posts, there are probably posts about nerd thighs.

if you look at the timestamps on some of these posts you will see that this has been going on for over a decade. now that's dedication.

Oh Yahoo answers. I miss it. Quora feels like smartass land. At least YA was fun. They also had a cool avatar creation tool in 2008-ish.

I recall having asked some really stupid questions on here when I was 8-9. Like, why don't we name kids like dogs, like with a letter corresponding on the year they are born. Or why are there barf bags on planes (when I actually knew the answer, I just felt like asking because I wanted to see replies).

Was i raped by a martian?
Two days ago i remember fixing my home ceiling, when out of nowhere i saw a yellow light, after that i don't remember anything after that, i woke and i realized i was still in the ceiling, but after that my anus felt sore, the next day i went to 4 proctologists, and none of them knew what was happening to me, as you can imagine, i was worried for not having any answers from the professionals, but waht worried me the most, is that in discovery channel there was stories of people being snatched and raped by martians, and they said that they experienced the same as i, even the strong anal sore.
Did i got raped by a martian?
