Kiwi Farms seems to have taken a little interest in 'Neocities and the Yesterweb'. I'm not linking to it out of respect to Agora Road, not as an admonishment of KF.

While we're on the subject of "feisty" places, lolcow.farm also has threads (one & two) discussing similar. I've mentioned them in passing before, but I'm taking the opportunity to pool all these places together here.

Finally, you can find sporadic (generally non-organized) discussions on 4chan that are in a similar vein. I typically just search desuarchive.org out of convenience.

I think the intention of the 2 farms is pretty clear: "farming funny". They are critical of quite a few things in the groups; they make fun of things. But it seems to just be discussion, though "intense" discussion. I'd describe lolcow as less intense and KF as not too far removed from the discussion of autonomy on the web, given its struggle ofc.

4chan is a little more (and less) interesting. Yes, they discuss "intensely" as well, much more randomly: both in terms of individual posts AND individual threads. But sometimes you'll see them try to... "do something". In the past month 4chan (or at least /g/) has "built" 2 webrings... arguably.
I can't go to Kiwifarms anyways... It's one of the few sites blocked by my ISP

When I was in the yesterweb Discord I noticed some interesting rules. I wish I could recite them. Maybe I posted them in this thread already, I forget.

The basic thing was outlining that people are free to say what they like and sometimes it may be controversial. What if the founder got cancelled and that's the real reason why they shut down yesterweb?
The classic

If it's HE, they're going through a court-case with the state of Washington last time I heard, best to get a VPN at this point or use the Tor site.

Their fucking manifesto.
but what makes us NOT like them?

This focus on nostalgia would also lead to an uncritical view of what the "old web" was. Many users would express a desire to return to an "old web" that did not exist, often with beliefs that the old web was inherently less bigoted, less consumerist, and less restrictive. While some of this is true depending on where you look, users would become hyper-focused on returning to a past that never existed rather than wanting to pursue a future that fit their values.

Nostalgia for the old web was not just limited to people that had experienced the old web. Surprisingly, there were many children and young adults that felt anemoia, or nostalgia for a place or time they have never been. It is clear that this was a response to the deterioration of the core web that these young people had grown up in. What isn't clear is whether this reaction is a longing for the old web and its aesthetics or if it reflects a deeper desire for change that is partially reflected by the positive aspects of the old web.

I'm reading the thing that Porcy posted up above. It's a pretty good teardown. Apparently they all wrote their own manifestos and circlejerked about communism and how great it would be if they could make the web trans (?).

I'm going to chalk up the death of the Yesterweb to infighting by more and more extreme shades of extreme leftism.

This R3ddit Post was pretty comprehensive and indicates that sadgrl was getting sick of being dragged down by the people associated with the yesterweb.

1. We get shit done on the road. We don't write 20 page essays about what we're going to do and why were going to do it before we have even done anything.
2. We don't have an enforced political orthodoxy
3. Commitment to old web 'culture'. This is a FORUM, not a discord server.

I heard there's a Discord server for Agora but I've never joined it. There's also the live chat on the site.

What has Agora ever got done other than post about how the glowies are out to get us?

You're talking to a forum who the majority of people are for the most part, align on the political right, mostly US Conservatives with some Liberal/Libertarian beliefs but not only that, we also wanna talk about cool shit that we find online whether it's old internet or not. Yesterweb was the opposite, and it was headed by clear ideologues who made it their intent to use their little following as a literal political movement for... Whatever feeds their narcissisms.

Anyway, they don't even like US more than anything actually. We don't care what they think but they're so sore about us that literally remnants of them still try to bad mouth us whenever we're mentioned. See here for example (link)

Not quite, it was mostly a voice channel but this was when Nagolbud was around who, btw, is the reason why Yesterweb never liked us and in fact used him as a reasoning to remove us from their webwring. It should be noted that Nagolbud also ran the voice channel on discord as well.

The only thing related to Agora is just the little "thread" I have on my server, The Treehouse II although please don't spam up my DMs for invite as it is a friend's only server. Sorry.

All three ezines
agora radio
countless threads about a diaspora of topics
the webring
and the personal sites it has inspired.

This is only a non comprehensive list of initatives I am aware of. There are doubtlessly more.

As I think @Eden said at one point. 'Don't write an essay about how shit the internet is currently and how it was better in the past. Actually make something better that inspires someone else'

Try telling that to the thousands of worry-worts and 'black-pilled' pessimists on the internet. I agree honestly, if people want to make the internet a better place, bitching about it won't do anything about. Learn to fucking code and shit. Can't get something for nothing brotha!

"old web"
To be fair, I think it would be better if we used terms like "indie" web rather than "yester" web or "old" web. It is true, virtually all of the people (including myself), who pine for this sort of thing were never actually alive to experience the old internet. They don't want to return to something old that never(?) existed, they want to build a future modeled on an idealized past.

The yesterweb forum and discord are dead now, but is the webring still up? I know a lot of the yw people had their own websites, but I'm not sure how many new personal websites they inspired. It would be interesting to try to compare how many personal sites spawned from Agora vs YW, but I don't know how to even begin to find that data.

I technically made my site before I made an account here, but I'm currently working on adding a blog/rss feed that I never would have even considered making if it weren't for this place.

The yesterweb webring is now down, but at it's highest it had 812 members. Yesterweb was huuuuge because it was the first webring any person getting into indie web would be exposed to.

Here's the archived member list before it got removed:

I know, I know, I should just join. I figured I'd submit an application when I was finished with the website, but I never seem to run out of things I want to add. For sure I'll do it when I'm done with the Blog/RSS feed

Doing the least evil, like meddling in the affairs of other countries to promote democracy right? We've done that plenty of times and it's worked.. like in Iraq, Cuba, Chile. We aren't doing this for our OWN interests instead of practicing virtue right?
The Cold War was a long-term affair, and a battle of ideological systems. I don't agree with all the tenets espoused by the "domino theory" school, and I think there was a lot of harm that was caused in the application of those principles. But I never once doubted that it would be better to live in the US than in the USSR, or in a world led by the US as opposed to one dominated by the USSR. And I think anyone who has ever lived in a Warsaw Pact country or in Central Asia understands that at a deep, personal level.

I'm sure if Russia fell tomorrow we Americans would replace it with a virtuous government that represents the people well right? We did that to the Soviets when they fell, remember?
I still can't believe we let that happen to Russia. Imagine all the problems we could have avoided if we at least tried to reconstruct like Nazi Germany or Japan. I know we didn't occupy the USSR like in a kinetic war, but fuck we didn't even try.

The USSR was a totalitarian, inefficient, corrupt, oppressive hell-hole where you could be shot or disappeared for not praising the Party's virtues loudly enough. People stood in queues for hours to receive meager bread rations. The system was so shitty and ineffective it eventually collapsed under its own weight, but not before subjecting hundreds of thousands to radiation poisoning because the authorities were unable to admit when they fucked up. Why in God's name would anyone ever want to live there?
