It looks like YouTube is cracking down on adblockers (again) but this time more seriously. After having used Google Chrome for over 10 years the thing that finally got me to jump ship to Firefox a few months ago was when I was starting to struggle with blocking ads on YT. But now it appears that even on non-chromium browsers it will start getting more difficult, or at least more tedious to block ads.

Got to say I'm not happy about this one bit, but maybe this will be what finally kills my YouTube addiction

I think what we're seeing on YouTube regarding adblockers will be the future of most websites, if something is "free" you're the product. But also the internet can't function with every website having a toll booth that requires 50p for access or something like that. I'm curious how this and adblockers being gimped on chromium browsers will pan out.

Personally haven't had the dreaded pop-up show up yet using AdGuard.

On the TV in the living room while one of my siblings was watching YouTube, I saw they couldn't skip ADs for like 30 seconds. I killed my YouTube addiction long ago, probably as far back as late-2021 to early-2022 though. There's nothing that really can interest me there anymore, and if there is they barely upload and I can't find other channels like them in the meantime. So essentially, I just use YouTube for uploads and listening to music. However, Odysee/Rumble exists for uploading (if i couldn't just host it myself for some videos at this point) and music I can just download and find via other sites. I don't need a Google account to watch YouTube anyways and I don't really see myself doing much of it in the future, plus I'll try to find Odysee/Rumble links to said videos and if they're interesting enough, I'll archive them myself.

If it didn't require a ridiculous amount of bandwidth, I'd gladly make the first actually perfect YouTube alternative. Most alternatives fall short because they're laggy as fuck or they have terrible UI. Odysee is hit or miss for the lag, tho thats expected due to the system behind that (aka its just an LRBY front-end and its decentralized as a result), however their UI is actually pretty good compared to other alternatives. Rumble has a shit UI, but it doesn't seem to lag much for me.

Most alternatives fall short because of what you said but also they tend to only attract fringes, lack variety, lack monetization (does not apply for rumble) and to be honest, lack viewers. Like don't get me wrong I support kick and rumble and odyssey but I barely use any of them because there's no content to watch.

Ultimately all the problems youtube has regarding ads and monetization most competitors will also have as soon as they run out of investor money, like rumble.

Pretty much. Unless you're interested in very fringe stuff or know an existing YouTube channel who uploads to Odysee/Rumble too, good luck finding content. I'm surprised Rumble has had investors for as long as it has considering what they usually seem to allow and not give a shit about on there.

Rumble does do some suppression (shadowbanning) from what I've heard, despite trying to attract more fringe investors and advertisers. I guess not even they can allow absolutely everything, otherwise they'd just bleed money

RIP. Though at least its better than the mainstream platforms here, granted I can't think of much where it was banned and not just in one specific country (maybe one or two instances that Rumble themselves censored for no reason) so considering its probably the most known of the alt-tech sites, thats pretty good.

Yeah overall seems that rumble is doing okay considering they do the least censoring. They're currently only banned in France and that's for not removing Russian media slop.

According to a survey 20% of American adults knew of rumble, which isn't terrible considering everything. Checking the home page, besides the politik slop, there's plenty of content that might actually be worth watching. Besides the lack of censorship being able to make money from your content helps attract lot of people it seems. I always recommend rumble and kick first when recommending alternatives because they have the biggest chance to actually make it.

Damn that is surprising. Figured they were banned in a few more countries, guess not.

I'm thinking Rumble has the best chance of actually being able to hold its own against YouTube, Kick might be able to win against Twitch but only because Twitch's staff are complete retards and everyone kinda knows they're falling apart. YouTube still has major power over videos, even TikTok which has more users than Google still mostly has short videos. Not to mention, many avoid using TikTok purely bc of the CCP stuff (ironic considering they still like to use YouTube despite Google and don't search for alternatives like I at least did, hell theres many who use YT Shorts as well simply because its not TikTok and I know those types of people in real life).

Rumble I kinda hope wins against YouTube, or at least doesn't just die off after a few months to a few years. It could actually be good, but it just has to stay that way.

Rumble definitely has a shot. After doing some quick research they have plenty of revenue streams (funnily enough also including YouTube (through licensing) and adsense). They still have the option of pursuing short form content but they honestly don't even need to. As long as nothing too controversial happens rumble will stick around for a while.

As long as Stake is fine Kick will also be fine, the recent Stake hack has me a bit worried. I'll be honest I dislike twitch a lot and hope they fail regardless even if YouTube is the one doing the killing.

Guilty as charged, I spend the occasional 15-30 minutes scrolling on shorts. Unlike tiktok which I unfortunately used for a bit, the shorts algorithm kinda sucks so I spend barely any time on it.

Based, I hope it stays around.

Agreed, also I hope Kick adds downloading your stream directly from their site because if they ever do so, I will gladly start streaming on Kick more. Until then, I kinda have to use Odysee or Rumble to preserve the stream unless I made a local copy (good idea anyways, but can get annoying and its not always perfect ofc).

Whenever I first heard of TikTok in 2020, I just never saw the purpose of it. I installed TikTok purely to give it one star, the original video i then posted showing that might still be up on YT but if not I'll reupload it to Odysee eventually. Too lazy to check right now tho.

Best to stay away from tiktok and keep that one star, there isn't much of value there. Sure you might not know the latest zoomer meme but who gives a rats ass about that? And besides most of that garbage gets uploaded to youtube at some point anyways

Yeah not sure why it's not added, considering VODs get saved. Hopefully they add it soon.

Honestly I'd prefer to stay away from the retardation of these zoomer memes, and sadly so. That or posted on Twitter or even alt-tech for some vids (though usually on these two, its to ridicule the content, not to actually enjoy it otherwise).

Yea its kinda weird. If they ever add it though, I will be enjoying it majorly. Mostly for a convenience thing with Kick, but still.

YouTube is a godzilla-sized server bloc that requires sustenance, without such it will wither away and die, as will any other platform not supported by some other revenue stream. Hosting and playing videos costs money! I am in a position where I can pay their month fee to eliminate ads. There are enough incredible content creators on the platform that I feel like I can justify the expense. Plus I can get my fix on my phone, tablet, TV, whatever. Slightly more expensive than heroin but with fewer health side effects (I think).

Rumble appears to be naught but a right-wing YouTubz, and I don't have a reason to bother with it.

alright

thought experiment: let's say 100% of people use Adblock and YouTube makes no revenue. What happens?

I'd rather give my money directly to the content creators. Which is why I have no problem with Patreon and similar services. Especially since most of the people I watch on Youtube don't rely on ad revenue (often because they're demonitized) so paying YouTube would in no way be supporting them. And the idea of paying YouTube monthly plus a little something for each content creator I do like is ridiculous to me.

As for YouTube itself, I have no problem if it crashes and burns. It's a monopolistic behemoth owned by an even bigger monopolisitc behemoth (owned by an even bigger one), like one of those Russian dolls. So they get no sympathy from me

Patreon really is the utopian dream of people having the opportunity to directly support the things they enjoy, as opposed to the corporatized Nielsen ratings of cable and terrestrial channels that I grew up with. I can imagine many people asking for this type of service in the 2000s. And I think it's honorable to directly support creators over YouTube.

I'm just an addict and an Apple whore, so the only way to escape ads on iThings is a subscription. You're living more morally than I am.

On Firefox I get the pop up every 20-30 videos but I can just close it and go on with my day with no ads. I use uBlock and it really seems like YouTube can't do anything to it on Firefox.
