Midwest Emo! (also called math rock) from the Midwestern US is probably one of my favorite styles of guitar. What makes it interesting is that typically rock music is played in a 4/4 time signature but Midwest Emo uses a lot of unusual time signatures like 3/2, 11/8, 5/4, and 7/4 so it has a very distinct sound. Often you'll hear people joke about how it'll have some of the most beautiful guitar you've ever heard accompanied by vocals done by someone who sounds as though they've never sung in their life, and its kinda true lol. Its a very homegrown genre, having originated in the Midwest means most of these bands primarily play basement shows, bars, and record stores as opposed to bigger venues although thats changing as its gotten more popular in recent years. Even the album covers look more akin to random photos you'd have in your camera roll than anything planned out and super artistic. Think along the lines of things that would originate from a young adulthood spent in a small town in mid America and thats what Midwest Emo sounds like.
