You do browse Agora via the command line from a retro-style PC, don't you?

Jokes aside, I'm considering going all-in on something like this. I have a MiSTer which is a device that emulates old game consoles via FPGA, and I'm going to put it in a wedge style computer case (think Commodore 64 or MSX). It runs a form of linux, so there's no reason why I can't run a terminal-based browser like Lynx from it and use it as a modern retro-style PC. It can run all of my favorite games and browse the web (well, from a terminal - retro style), it sounds like the perfect PC.

Look, I love running shit in the terminal as much as the next guy, but Agora is just too beautiful to do that to. So much effort was put into the sites design, not to mention the effort users put into their profiles and signatures. IMO its a big part of the road experience.

You have a great point, but that leaves me with nothing to do with my toy. And now that you mention it, I'm sad that I can't see your avatar because I remember avatar's far better than usernames :( Maybe I need to figure out something better.

It must be fun to view the Internet like that. Sometimes, on extremely rare occasions, some website like Twitter or Instagram will load up in very basic HTML in my browser, with none of the flashy bells and whistles, and they basically look like old 90s sites. I have no idea why they do this, or what triggers it, it's either that my browser is running low on memory, or storage is being used somewhere else, or something. Either way, it's a really cool glitch and it's interesting whenever it happens.

I don't use Agora Road through a TUI client, but I do point my TUI RSS client at it and get new posts that way.
RSS is great if you want to keep up on things without being pulled into the attention-time vortex every time you turn on your computer.

RSS is like magic to me because it's been around forever and I just kind of ignored it. I remember seeing buttons to add websites to RSS feed YEARS ago and I always ignored them because I didn't know what it was and at the time I never thought to look into it. These days I use RSS to pull posts from my blog and display them on my neocities site, but I still don't keep a proper feed. I should start, and I could check it from the MiSTer after I finish this build.
Just visit BBS if you want that kind of stuff.
FINE I WILL

What console browser do you use? I used to use Lynx back in college to download porn during a time in which the only Internet access I could get was Public WiFi connections, lol.
I'm testing with Lynx on my mac right now. I need to compile it in a way that it will run on the MiSTer. My friend tried and he got a version working but his compiled version doesn't support for https for some reason.

I decided to check out some BBS today since you recommended it. It was neat to experience for the first time, and some of the communities I checked out were even being hosted from vintage hardware. Surprisingly there's a lot of BBS communities still out there (although not many members) and you can view posts from a really long time ago. Cool stuff.

Yeah. People are saying that only totally deranged are using BBS in 2024, but, well, who cares, maybe I'm deranged. I have several BBSes I visit from time to time. See you there, I guess.
The point of my post was though that I do not really see the need to turn forums into something BBS-esque. They are different mediums, and both are interesting in their own right. I mean, personally I think Agora could use a bit more classic front page layout, but I really do not see the point of decompiling it down to the text in the terminal. Dunno, maybe it's just me, but I think it will only make the whole functionality a bit less comfortable, since forums were built with an UI in mind.
BBS, on the other hand, is a system that was made for the terminal, so if you want to have fun with your cyberdeck - those boards are just the place for it, IMO.

No I think you're right. And while I'm having some trouble compiling a browser to work on it, telnet should be easy to install.

It took a while but I finally gathered all of the parts and printed a case to finish this. From the outset my idea was to browse the web via the terminal using something like Lynx, but in the end I settlet on just dialing into BBS instead. The Commodore 64 core has a built in modem, so you can get the full-on retro experience that way. Also some BBS such as The Old Web (or was it The Old Net? I forgot) offer the ability to read recent news and browse websites via the BBS.

This picture is from before I put the top plate on. It's not the most aesthetically pleasing wedge case in the world but it does it's job.

Looks neat. Post the picture with the top plate on when it'll be done.

I have to re-print the top plate first. It has some slots along the top for aesthetics and it looks like shit because I printed it face-down (faster and less filament) and the slots are extremely shallow so they got messed up when I tried to peel off the extra material. Then I tried sanding over my mistake like a retard and that made it worse.

Take your time, mate. It's very cool that you are building this thing yourself. Thumbs up.
